The Saigon Water Puppet Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City, a Vietnamese national treasure, will perform at the Waikiki Shell at the end of the month.
The 1,000-year-old art form will be displayed in an hour-long program of vignettes about the daily life in the fishing and farming villages of old Vietnam. An 18-member ensemble will use puppetry, choreography, dance and the music of a five-piece orchestra to share the myths and folklore of Vietnam.
The company travels with a pagoda and collapsible pool, plus more than 150 brightly painted puppets. Honolulu will provide 10,000 gallons of water for the production.
Shows will be at 7 p.m. May 30; 10 a.m., 1 and 4 p.m. May 31; and noon and 4 p.m. June 1.
Tickets are $12 -- $8 for students, seniors and Friends of East-West Center members -- available at the Blaisdell box office (591-2211) and Ticketmaster sites; or, charge by phone at 877-750-4400. Call 944-7177.
