Kauai's Edward Kane and Farrington's Mark Ilagan form a surprising semifinal matchup in the Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA State Tennis Championships.
Kane, the No. 9 seed, and Ilagan, the sixth seed, play this morning for a chance to play in the boys final.
Top-seed and defending champion Robbie Lim of Punahou plays No. 3 Dillon Porter of Kahuku in the other semifinal.
Kane upset fourth-seeded Jonathan Farm of Punahou 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park. Ilagan eased past second-seeded Derrick Lajola of Iolani 6-3, 6-2.
A Punahou player has won three of the past four boys singles titles.
The girls followed their seeding yesterday in doubles and singles. Kimberly Kaloi -- along with Lauren Shin -- will try to keep the doubles title in the family. The Kaloi family has accounted for the last three girls doubles titles.
The team of Chris Iwamura and Nicholas Leong of Punahou has dropped only five games in three boys doubles matches.
