Pancakes for Mom

The Kiwanis Club of Kaneohe is hosting its 42nd Mother's Day Pancake Breakfast, 6:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday at Benjamin Parker Elementary School.

Breakfast of pancakes, Portuguese sausage and scrambled eggs can be purchased for dining in or take-out. Cost is $4.50; $2.50 for children $2.50. Call 247-6796 or pay at the door.



Organic discourse

Organic foods will be the topic of the May lecture of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, 7 p.m. next Wednesday at the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse.

Kimberly D. Clark, owner-operator of Just Add Water, will speak on "Organic Foods: Their Future is Up to YOU."

Just Add Water is a 6-year-old program for growing organic produce, teaching about organic farming and marketing the products through a cooperative of a dozen farms.

Clark, who farms a 1/2-acre organic garden in Waimanalo, has a doctorate in agricultural economics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Call 944-VEGI.

Clark will also speak at 7 p.m. May 15 at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Kahului, Maui.

Everything Asian

Walter Rhee hosts a tour of Asian restaurants through the University of Hawaii Outreach Program, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Meet at Pioneer Plaza lower level. Cost is $38 plus $15 lab fee. Register on-line at www.outreach.hawaii.edu/Programs/HL1-STYLE.htm or call 956-5666.

Immediately afterward, Rhee will teach a class in "Quick and Easy Asian Appetizers," 2:30 to 4 p.m., at the Lyon Arboretum. He'll demonstrate the making of look fun, sashimi with Korean-style sauce and Vietnamese summer rolls. Cost is $28; $25 for arboretum members. Call 988-0456.

Arboretum classes

The following cooking classes are coming up at the Lyon Arboretum. Classes run 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.:

Specialties from Alan Wong's Restaurant: With Wade Ueoka, chef de cuisine, Friday.

Asian cooking: Walter Rhee continues his series of classes with healthy dishes next Wednesday, hot pots on May 17 and Korean noodles on May 30.

Cost is $28 per class; $25 for arboretum members. Call 988-0456.

That's Italian!

Four Italian chefs will teach a series of Monday-night cooking classes at Kapiolani Community College. Participants will help with the cooking, then sample the dishes.

Classes run 6:30 to 9 p.m. and cost $60 each. The schedule:

May 19: Donato Loperfido of Donato's demonstrates Stinco di Agnello (lamb shanks) con Polenta.
June 2: Eugenio Martignago of Nick's Fishmarket with Zuppa di Pesce (fish soup) and Antipasto di Pesce.
June 9: Sergio Mitrotti of Café Sistina with Gnocchi con La Salsa di Gorgonzola.
June 23: Joey Julian of C&C Pasta Company with Vegetarian Lasagne.
