Sandler movie
films on Oahu

Local production on "50 First Kisses," starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, will finish two weeks of filming in Windward Oahu on Friday, mostly at Kualoa Ranch and Waikane Pier. The production takes over Sea Life Park next week, using 12 employees (six animal handlers and six other park workers) as extras for three days. That Thursday, 1,000 unpaid extras will be used to play park patrons.

The rustic house adjacent to Waikane Pier is being used as the "home" of Lucy (Barrymore's character), who suffers from memory loss due to a car accident, so she daily relives the moments up to the day of the crash. To make her life tolerable, her dad Marlin (Blake Clark) and brother Doug (Sean Astin) do the same activities with her over and over again, like watch the same football game. And every night, after she paints a mural on the garage wall, they dutifully wipe it off for her to do it again the following day.

Major scenes filmed here so far: Marlin's confrontation with Henry (Sandler), ordering the would-be suitor not to contact his daughter to prevent problems caused by changing her routine; Doug, described in the script as a meathead-type ready to defend his sister at a moment's notice, threatening Sandler to stay away; and Lucy and Henry sharing a passionate kiss in a crew-created rain storm during a night scene by the home.

While off the set, Sandler has been surfing at Old Mans at Diamond Head. Surf school owner Hans Hedeman taught the actor how to surf during filming here two years ago of "Punch Drunk Love." Sandler gave Hedeman a speaking part ($655 a day) in this movie, casting him as a driver who stops to help Henry when Henry's car breaks down. Henry fakes the breakdown because Lucy will be driving by and Henry hopes she'll stop. "I got it covered ... now please get out of here and leave me alone!" Henry yells at Hedeman's character.

Also an avid basketball player, Sandler has arranged to use a Kahala-area court, not far from the Kahala Mandarin Oriental hotel where he's staying. He's had the court surrounded by dark screening so he and his buddies can play in privacy.
