Hapai massage
also makes her happy
HOW about something special for a mom-to-be? Mandara Spa has just such an item which they call the "Hapai Massage." It's a great pick-me-up for future moms and helps get them through either a day at work or a means to put them in a better mood prior to that special day, or afterward. It makes a perfect Mother's Day gift as well. One woman who swears by it is Judy Hollister, director of marketing for Mandara and herself going through her final trimester prior to giving birth to twins. To make reservations for Mother's Day or whenever at the spa in the Hilton Hawaiian Village, call 945-7721 ...
IF you're interested in communications, does Dick Barber have just the treat for you! As longtime exec director of the Pacific Telecommunications Conference, he's assembled more info on those proceedings than you could imagine, and he's donated them to the UH. So check with the School of Communication to get access to Barber's 20-volume set totaling 13,495 pages ...
Openings and closings
TWO fine ensemble casts are completing four-week runs in their respective plays this weekend. Both "The Weir" at the Yellow Brick Studio on Keawe Street. and "Morning's at Seven" at HPU will be staged tomorrow through Sunday ... And opening a one-month run at Kumu Kahua at 46 Merchant St. on May 15 will be Alan Sutterfield's historic comedy, "King Kalakaua's Poker Game." ... And why would Hawaii Theater manager Burton White use his day off to attend the hot new film, "X-Men 2"? Could be because one of its stars is Kelly Hu, who'll be performing in the latest trio of women spouting their "Vagina Monologues" at the Hawaii May 21 through 25. Teri Hatcher will headline the show when it plays Maui, and it'll be a delight seeing her doing something besides interacting with Howie Long in Radio Shack commercials ...
IT'S news to me, but my friend Bruce Bellingham, attending poet Rod McKuen's 70th birthday party at Carnegie Hall in N.Y., reports in passing that singer-composer Patricia Watson flew in from Maui for the festivities, and that David Galligan, who worked on many McKuen projects, would be directing Watson's rock opera "Soulmates" in Honolulu. He adds almost nonchalantly that McKuen will take on the role of the priest ...
And the award goes to ...
IT'S hard to imagine a more worthy winner of the Roselani Medallion, given out annually by the local chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters. The recipient for 2003 is 90something David Eyre, a longtime figure in public relations circles and, with his late wife, Cynthia, founder of Honolulu magazine and its co-editor for 10 years. When the Star-Bulletin was fighting for its life from the Goliath of Gannett, Eyre could be seen waving a placard reading, "Save the Star-Bulletin." Speakers at the awards ceremony May 12 at the Pacific Club will be John Heckathorn and Cobey Black ...
