Moving to the rhythm
Hypersquad Dance Company presents its fifth annual contemporary dance concert, "Unspoken," Thursday through Saturday at Leeward Community College Theatre.
Students ages 4 and up will show the moves they've picked up in director Jason Ulep's classes, ranging from jazz and ballet to Latin and hip-hop.
The concerts take place at 6:45 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 12:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $11 in advance and $13 at the door. Call the dance studio at 676-4973.
Flamenco workshop
La Yeni, described as "cerebral and eloquent" by the L.A. Times and "captivating" by La Opinion, will conduct a three-day intensive flamenco workshop at Ballet Hawaii.
Sessions for beginners will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. May 20 to 22, followed by 8 to 9 p.m. sessions for intermediate and advanced students. Due to limited class space, preregistration is recommended. There will be live guitar accompaniment for all classes.
Yeni began her dancing career at age 6 and studied in Sevilla, Spain, with such internationally renowned flamenco artists as Belen Maya, Javier Cruz, José Galván, Manolo Marin and Juana Amaya. She has been a soloist in Los Angeles with Juan Talavera, Jesus Montoya, Joaquin Enciñas and Omayra Amaya and appears regularly with guitarist José Tanaka's Los Angeles-based Soniquete Flamenco Dance Company.
Ballet Hawaii is in the Dole Cannery near the Food Court. For price information, call Ballet Hawaii at 521-8600.
