Learn about volcanoes at series of lectures

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park continues its "After Dark in the Park" series of talks at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays this month.

The talks take place in the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium as follows:

Tuesday: "Mapping Hawaii's Undersea Landscape: The Bathymetry of Hawaiian Volcanoes": USGS marine biologist Barry Eakins presents a digital video tour of the features around the Hawaiian Islands, revealing large landslides, submarine canyons, fossil shorelines, eruptive ridges, volcanic cones and seamounts, explaining what they tell us about how Hawaiian volcanoes grow and decay.

May 13: "The Kupukupu Fire: The Fire That Would Not Be Extinguished": Tim Tunison gives an overview of Kilauea's continuing eruption that began near the Pu'u O'o vent last Mother's Day. Rivers of lava ignited fires that burned forests and fields for months. Tunison, resource management chief for the park, discusses the unique challenges of managing lava-ignited fires.

May 20: "Recent Changes in the Pu'u O'o Eruption: The Mother's Day Flow": USGS Geologist Rick Hobbitt summarizes events leading to the Mother's Day eruption last year.

May 27: "It's All in the Timing: The Key to Successful Plant Establishment": In a break from the volcanic subjects, botanist Carol Baskin, a professor at the University of Kentucky, details the amazing world of seeds and how knowledge of the germination process can assist in plant restoration and growth management.

The talks are co-sponsored by the Hawaii Natural History Association. Park fees apply, and a $1 donation helps support "After Dark in the Park" programs.
