Wolf Pack
beat Rainbows

Trapasso signs 2 recruits

RENO, Nev. >> Hawaii banged out 15 hits yesterday at Nevada's Peccole Park, but it was not enough to produce a Western Athletic Conference baseball win.

Rainbows shortstop Brian Finegan opened the game with his first home run of the season, but that was the only extra base hit UH managed in the 10-5 loss.

The Wolf Pack erased a 3-0, first-inning deficit with a six-run outburst in the second inning, knocking out UH starter Chris George.

Nevada got six runs on its three extra-base hits. Kevin Kouzmanoff's two-run double capped the second-inning scoring spree and ended George's day. Clary Carlsen came in and pitched well except for two change-ups that resulted in two-run homers by Kouzmanoff in the fourth and Erick Streelman in the seventh.

"When you get 15 hits and only five runs, that is frustrating. There were several two-out hits and the double play hurt," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said.

"Chris was struggling from the get-go. He didn't have his slider. It was loose, hanging all game and not his sharp slider. It was evident early on he did not have command."

George hit Streelman with a 1-2 pitch to start the second. After he fanned Chris Gimenez on three pitches, Jacob Butler and Tony Cappuccilli singled for one run. George loaded the bases by hitting Chris Dickerson with his first pitch.

Robert Marcial's fielder's choice grounder brought in the second run, but Ryan Strain walked on a 3-2 count to load the bases again, Matt Hayes singled in two runs and Kouzmanoff's double of the center-field wall plated two more.

"The thing is we're actually swinging the bats well, so it is frustrating from both ends," Trapasso said. "We feel like we are playing well, but we are not getting the hits when we need them."

Jaziel Mendoza and Josh Green each had three hits. Green's effort came a day after his fiancee gave birth to a baby girl in a Reno hospital.

"Having a baby is a life-changing experience and maybe that's why he got three hits. Two were to the opposite field, one a line drive down the left-field line and that's a first for Josh this year," Trapasso said.

Hawaii (26-22, 7-16 WAC) cut the Nevada (26-19, 14-5 WAC) lead to 8-5 in the seventh. Brent Cook singled home Finegan, who opened with a single to left. Cook scored when Rocky Russo reached on an fielding error by Kouzmanoff at third.

In the series finale today at 10 a.m., Keahi Rawlins will start on the mound for UH.

Trapasso signs
2 recruits

Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso has announced the signing of two more recruits for the 2004 season.

Junior college transfer Nate Thurber joins Kala Ka'aihue, whose signing the Star-Bulletin reported last month.

Thurber is a right-handed outfielder at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College. He leads his team with a .433 batting average, 17 home runs, 53 RBI and 57 runs scored, while also contributing 13 doubles in 48 games thus far this season. Thurber will be a junior at Hawaii next season.

"Nate Thurber is a strong offensive player who is a run-producer," Trapasso said. "He has tremendous power and should hit in the middle of the lineup for us next season."

Ka'aihue, a catcher at Iolani School, is considered the state's top prospect by most.

"We're very excited to get Kala," Trapasso said. "The fact that he signed with Hawaii gives us a great feeling that we are continuing to head in the right direction with the program."

The Rainbows signed 12 players for 2004 during the early signing period last November.
