Hawaii sending 3 tennis
teams to final round of 16


The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Division II women's championships yesterday, beating UC San Diego 5-0 at Laie.

The Seasiders will proceed in their quest for their fifth national championship Thursday in Altamonte Springs, Fla. They will take on the winner of today's match between Armstron Atlantic State and North Florida.

The Seasiders opened the match with 8-2 wins in all three doubles matches, then only needed singles wins by Adrienn Hegedus amd Anna Anikanova to clinch it. The other four Seasiders were winning their matches when Anikanova ended it.

HPU women rained out: The Hawaii Pacific women's team was rained out of its regional final at Pomona, Calif., yesterday and will play today.

The Sea Warriors meet host Cal Poly Pomona for the right to join BYUH in Florida. HPU knocked the Broncos out of the NCAA tournament last year.

Sea Warriors move on: The Hawaii Pacific men's team had an easy time in its regional final, beating UC San Diego 7-1 at San Diego yesterday.

HPU's Sasha Pirc and Milos Koprivica gave up a point in the doubles competition, but the Sea Warriors swept through five singles matches to make it meaningless.

BYUH men challenged: The BYU-Hawaii men's tennis team had to rely on its depth to escape with a 5-2 win over UC Davis today in their regional Final.

With Hong Tae Kim and Jong Woong Yoon unable to play, and No. 1 Jan Krejci falling behind in the first set of his singles match, Daouda Ndiaye came through at No. 3 for the Seasiders.

UC Davis's Greg Lee defeated Krejci 7-5 in the first set, but Ndiaye finished off Blake Roberts 6-3, 6-4 to secure the victory for the Seasiders.

Ching scores goal to stop Revolution

FOXBORO, Mass. >> Kamehameha product Brian Ching scored a goal as the San Jose Earthquakes beat the New England Revolution 2-0 yesterday to improve to 3-0-1.

Ching scored on a header from 12 yards out in the second half.

FieldTurf discussion at Quarterback Club

Honolulu Stadium Authority member Robin Campaniano and National Football League turf specialist George Toma will headline tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

UH Associate Athletic Director Thomas Sadler will also appear at the event, which begins at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant after lunch is served at 11:30.

UH Hilo Chancellor on NCAA Council

Hawaii-Hilo Chancellor Dr. Rose Tseng has been named by the NCAA to fill an at-large vacancy on the Division II Presidents Council.

Tseng's appointment on the policy-making body will run through 2007.
