Wolf Pack pitching
frustrates Rainbows
WAC standings
From staff and wire reports
RENO, Nev. >> Ricky Bauer gave Hawaii a strong pitching performance, but the Rainbow offense was stymied once again yesterday afternoon by Nevada right-hander Mateo Miramontes.
Bauer allowed only two earned runs in pitching a complete game, but the Wolf Pack won the opener of the three-game Western Athletic Conference series, 3-1, at Peccole Park.
Hawaii has never beaten Miramontes in his three years at Nevada. If he is drafted next month and turns pro, that would make a number of returning Rainbows happy. Miramontes scattered seven hits, struck out nine, while walking four.
Nevada (25-19, 13-5 WAC) got the runs it needed in the fourth inning. Ryan Strain doubled off the top of first baseman Andrew Sansaver's glove into right field. One out later, he scored on Kevin Kouzmanoff's double down the left-field line. Jaziel Mendoza's throw from left field to second base was offline and went into short right field, allowing Kouzmanoff to continue to third. He scored on Erick Streelman's sacrifice fly to center.
The Rainbows (26-21, 7-15 WAC) cut the deficit in half in the sixth with some help from Miramontes, who walked Mendoza to start the inning. Mendoza took second on a wild pitch, moved to third when Miramontes threw wildly to second on an attempted pickoff and scored on Brian Bock's third single of the game.
Despite getting the leadoff man aboard in five of the nine innings, the 'Bows failed to get any more key hits, especially with two outs, leaving four runners stranded in scoring position. The Wolf Pack also turned four double plays that wiped out four of those leadoff runners.
"Ricky was outstanding again for us," said UH coach Mike Trapasso. "He pitched really good, considering he only gave up two earned runs in this park.
"This is the way Ricky has been for his last six starts, but it seems the pattern over the last couple of years is he doesn't get much support. Maybe he should take his position players out to dinner or go to church or something.
"It wasn't a situation of bad breaks. We just did not do a good job offensively today. We have to do a better job of that. If we get this kind of pitching the rest of the weekend, the games will be close and we'll have a chance to win."
Nevada's final run came on a home run by Tony Cappuccilli in the eighth inning.
Senior right-hander Chris George will be on the mound today as UH tries to win its first game here and end a nine-game losing streak to the Wolf Pack.
