Seasiders sweep
into regional final
The BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team advanced to today's NCAA Division II West Regional final with a 5-0 sweep of Sonoma State yesterday in Laie.
BYUH, the defending national champion, faces UC-San Diego at 10 a.m. today in the regional final in Laie.
BYUH's doubles team of Adrienn Hegedus and Judy Weng started the Seasiders' sweep with an 8-0 win over Sonoma State's Kelly Murphy and Brianna Bailey.
UC-San Diego won four singles matches to rally past UH-Hilo.
Hawaii Pacific also moved on with a 5-3 win over UC-Davis in Pomona, Calif.
HPU faces host Cal Poly Pomona in today's regional final.
The regional winners advance to the 16-team NCAA Division II National Championship tournament set for May 8-11 in Altamonte, Springs, Fla.
UC Davis men sweep UH-Hilo: The UC Davis men's tennis team swept UH-Hilo 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Regional to set up a meeting with host BYU-Hawaii today.
BYUH, the defending national champion, had a bye in the first round and faces UC Davis at 2 p.m. in the regional final with the winner advancing to the national tournament in Florida.
UC Davis survived the first round by winning all five of yesterday's matches with UH-Hilo in straight sets.
Football players honored tomorrow
Seventeen Hawaii high school senior football players will be honored tomorrow night at the 5th annual Hawaii Chapter 242 of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame banquet at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Six players are from Kamehameha: Jason Adrian Fong-Aiu, Aaron Kahaloa, Kekoa Smith, C. Nikolas Soo, Justin Uale and Richard Willing. Three are from St. Louis: Wilson Afoa, William Fale and Frank Fernandez Jr.
Also chosen are Kauilike Kalama and Elliot Twiggs, McKinley; Anthony Holyfield, Roosevelt; Ranson Kepa, Kailua, Jaimie Rego Jr., Moanalua; Jordan Savusa, Mid-Pacific; Eric Taaca, Waianae; and Keone Tawata, Radford.
In addition, veteran coach Charlie Miyashiro will be recognized for his service as a high school football coach and mentor to thousands in both Hilo and Honolulu.
Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier is the keynote speaker for the event which begins at 6 p.m.
