Baseball: Kamehameha advances

If Kalaheo is going to stay alive in its quest for a sixth straight Oahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball title, it will have to play much better than it did last night.

It took the Mustangs more than three quarters to warm up, but they finally shook off the Campbell Sabers 42-27 in the opening round of the OIA tournament at McKinley's gym.

Other winners last night were McKinley, Farrington and Kaiser -- as the Eastern Division went 4-0.

Next up for Kalaheo (7-4) is Eastern Division champion Moanalua (9-1), which beat the Mustangs 60-50 in the regular season on April 23.

"I think pretty much the talking is done," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said. "We've played an entire (regular) season. It's just a matter of playing consistently.

"We cannot make the kind of mistakes we made tonight and we cannot have the lulls; sometimes we just don't score offensively. What we got in the fourth quarter is what we're capable of."

Smith, who scored 11 points, went up for a shot against Fukumoto.

Kalaheo plays at Moanalua tonight at 6:30, with the winner advancing to the OIA semifinals and earning a berth in the state tournament.

"Hopefully we're excited (about playing Moanalua)," Furtado said. "You get into a situation where one game can get you into the state tournament, you'd better be excited or stay home."

The teams have not met during Kalaheo's five-year run of OIA championships.

"I just think we have to play a full game tomorrow," sophomore Taylor Smith said. "We have to play a full 32 minutes because last time we played (Moanalua) I don't know what we were doing in the third quarter. We have to play hard for 32 minutes."

In the teams' first meeting, the Menehunes outscored the Mustangs 18-6 in the third quarter to take an insurmountable 46-25 lead.

Last night, Smith scored nine of her 11 points in the second half and Kalaheo extended its winning streak in the OIA playoffs to 16 games (with the last loss coming in the 1997 OIA final).

Kalaheo only trailed Campbell 7-3 despite missing 15 of its first 16 shots from the floor.

Unhappy with the play of his starters, Furtado subbed in his second five for eight full minutes in the first and second quarters.

"I thought in the first quarter we got a lot of good shots," Furtado said. "I wasn't concerned about the kind of shots we were getting, I just thought when we weren't hitting them we were slow in getting back defensively.

"We didn't have the intensity on the defensive end. I didn't think the (starters) did a good job of that so I sat them down and I went with the second bunch and they played hard."

The Mustangs tied the game at 7 on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter, as they broke the Sabers' full-court press, leading to easy layups by Stephanie Hobbs and Shantel Marumoto.

Hobbs hit a jumper to put Kalaheo up 9-7 before Furtado brought his starters back in. Kalaheo led 15-13 at halftime, despite shooting just 23 percent (6-for-26).

Campbell (8-3) was slightly better at 25 percent, but turned the ball over 12 times.

The lead changed hands several times in the third quarter before Shaina Siliga picked up a loose ball and drained a jumper to put Kalaheo ahead 26-23 at the end of the quarter.

After missing their first seven shots in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs finished by hitting seven of their final eight shots and outscoring the Sabers 16-2.

Siliga started the run by hitting a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 5:03 left in the game. Campbell's Jamie Kua blocked Kalaheo's next shot and Jalen Garcia scored on a fastbreak to bring the Sabers within two, 29-27.

But Brandi Benson scored on a spin move and Taylor Smith hit three straight baskets to give the Mustangs a 37-27 lead, ending any hopes the Sabers had of winning.

Siliga scored all 10 of her points after halftime. Smith added eight rebounds and two assists.

Garcia and Chaunte Jackson combined for 17 points for Campbell. Jamie Kua added eight rebounds and five blocked shots.
