Softball season ends
early for Hawaii

Division II scoreboard

For the third straight year, Hawaii will not have a representative in the NCAA Division II softball regional.

The state's hopes were dashed this time after Hawaii-Hilo stranded 24 runners in a doubleheader and was swept last week by Montana State-Billings.

The performance dropped them to ninth in the regional poll, one spot ahead of Hawaii Pacific. Only the top six teams, including conference champions, get a shot at the regional.

"The ending part was a disappointment," Hilo coach Callen Perreira said. "We had a shot to get into the regional but for some reason we didn't step it up when we needed to."

Western New Mexico, which also took three out of four from Hilo late in the year, won the Pacific West Conference title and will go to the tournament as the second seed, behind Cal State Bakersfield. UC Davis, Humboldt State, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Stanislaus round out the field.

This is usually the time of year when area athletic directors dust off their angrily worded form letters to the NCAA accusing the organization of snubbing them. Those letters are staying put for now, partly because the field is selected purely by the numbers for the first time this year and partly because none of Hawaii's teams feel left out.

Hawaii Pacific fell behind too early to catch up and Hilo fell apart at the end after a good start. The Vulcans were expected to dominate, but the re-emergence of Brigham Young-Hawaii and Montana State-Billings made the conference more than a two-team race and took something out of them.

The Vulcans can look back on the season as one in which they introduced former Kamehameha star Leo Sing Chow to the college game. Sing Chow finished the year 10th in the nation in earned run average and ended with a 14-4 record.

The problem for Hilo, though, was that the longer college season took a lot out of the freshman's arm and she could not pitch on back-to-back days when the Vulcans folded down the stretch. She was needed, because Hilo's returning pitchers who were so strong last year lost effectiveness as the season went along.

Perreira believes that Sing Chow will come back stronger next year after going through a rehab plan over the summer.

Water polo power: The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's water polo team has signed another California standout to a letter of intent for this fall. Brad Spongberg, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound driver from Long Beach who was All-League each of the last three seasons, has signed to play for the Seasiders.

Spongberg, who prepped at Millikan High School under Johnny Bega, was an honor roll student and was named to the 18-and-under Junior Olympic Team. He helped lead his high school team to the CIF playoffs every year he played.

First round this weekend: Hilo interviewed Salt Lake Community College volleyball coach Julie Morgan yesterday and were to meet with Baldwin Wallace College (Ohio) coach Victoria Brault today.

Hilo assistant athletic director Jim DeMello says that even if one of the candidates overwhelms the committee, the new coach would not be hired until next week at the earliest.

HPU honors athletes: Hawaii Pacific basketball player Leandro Maruoka and volleyball player Susy Garbelotti were named the school's athletes of the year this week.

The school's cheerleaders took the school's Emma Mauz "Super Fan" award and Rachel Kettering was the best of that bunch, being named the cheerleader of the year.
