Kelly Hu: To star in "The Vagina Monologues" at Hawaii Theatre May 21 through 25.

The Kamehameha Schools graduate, who was Miss Teen U.S.A. in 1985, appeared in several TV series before landing a recurring role on the Don Johnson action-drama series "Nash Bridges," then using her brown belt in karate in the action-comedy series "Martial Law." Hu also starred opposite Hawaii's The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) in "The Scorpion King."

Appearing with Hu in "The Vagina Monologues" will be New York actors Starla Benford and Amy J. Carle. Carle, who was in the cast when the "Vagina Monolougues" national tour debuted at the Hawaii Theatre last year with stars Mackenzie Phillips and Loretta Swit.

Tickets are $20 to 45 for performances at 7:30 p.m. May 21 and 22; 5 and 9 p.m. May 23; 5 and 8 p.m. May 24; and 2 and 7 p.m. May 25. The May 22 show will be interpreted for the deaf and hearing impaired.

Tickets are available at the Hawaii Theatre Box Office, 1130 Bethel St., or via the charge-by-phone number, 528-0506. Discounts for groups of 12 or more (except Saturday) are 10 percent off and available by calling 732-7733.

There will also be an opening night benefit for Parents And Children Together, which is benefiting from the Hawaii Theatre engagement. The $100 tickets include a pre-show dinner at Compadres Bar & Grill in Ward Centre, prime seating at the performance, trolley transportation to and from the show, and a cast party after the production at Compadres. Reservations are available by calling PACT at 847-3285.

"The Vagina Monologues" is presented in Hawaii by Jam Theatricals, which also brought "Spirit of the Dance" to the Hawaii Theatre earlier this year.

HONOLULU BOY CHOIR
The Honolulu Boy Choir was founded 27 years ago and will host its first matsuri celebration on Boy's Day.

Boy Choir celebrated

On Boys' Day, May 5, 1976, the Honolulu Boy Choir was officially incorporated, two years after its formation. That special anniversary was never recognized, but it will be on Monday as the choir hosts a Boys' Day Celebration Matsuri.

The event takes place 6 to 9 p.m. at the Pacific Beach Hotel Ballroom, 2490 Kalakaua Ave. Tickets are $50 for adults (partially tax-deductible) and $30 for ages 12 and under.

More than 2,200 boys have passed through the choir since its founding by Roy Hallman, then-choral director at Central Union Church. The boys ranged in age from 7 to 14. The oldest would be about 41 today.

The current choral director is Kaimi Pelekai, a Kamehameha School graduate and an alumnus of the choir. Local entertainers Jason Lent, of DisGuyz; Sean Na'auao; and Jeff Rasmussen are also choir alumni.

During the matsuri, which is intended to become an annual event, there will be a buffet dinner and entertainment by the choir and other talent, and awards ceremonies honoring talented young men in several categories and adult youth workers. There will also be silent and live auctions.
