A guided tour

YOU DON'T have to be a student of Hawaiian history to take visitors on a tour of Oahu these days. Debby McGraw, a longtime Honolulu resident, has begun a new enterprise to take over the tour guide reigns. Her new TourTalk-Oahu, with plans to expand to other islands, offers up CDs or tapes for visitors to play on their Oahu drives or for newly arrived residents to help get acquainted with their new home. McGraw estimates 3,000 miles were driven during development stages -- comparable to a drive from the West to East Coasts of the mainland -- to ensure the timing of the tour was perfect. Among narrators on the CDs and tapes are Joe Recca, Kimo Kahoano and Ka'upena Wong with music of Gordon Freitas and Kahala Moon also featured. The full tour consists of two-and-a-half hours of narration. You'll learn things about Hawaii you never knew ...

PRIME beef is great. Prime real estate can be very profitable. Prime time is the best TV has to offer. And now co-publishers Lori Arizumi and Claudia Tateishi are hoping their Prime, the magazine, will also attain greatness. The new Hawaii senior citizen magazine, is characterized as aimed at "living better the best years of your life." Prime will incorporate the best of the state's only senior specialty magazine, Hawaii's Senior Lifestyles, new editorial sections aimed at making one's prime years, well, Prime. No cracks on why this magazine caught my attention! Let's just say it tickled my Prime Ribs ...

Legs to stand on

MARTIN & MacArthur owner Jon Martin designs handcrafted furniture, and his latest creation, a chest of drawers that, while beautiful, looks otherwise ordinary, has something that sets it apart. The legs it uses to stand on are hand-carved pineapples with carved maile leaf border accents. Some admirers have even elevated the work to "piece of art" status. it can be viewed at Martin & MacArthur's Kahai Street location ...

QUITE an honor for Hawaii Opera Theatre. HOT's residence program has turned out to be red-HOT! Education Outreach Manager Erik Haines has been asked to speak at the Opera America conference 2003 in June. He'll be discussing the Opera Residence Program, which recently culminated on Molokai with a truncated production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute," produced and performed by Molokai Complex School children ...

Hold the de Mayo

THE folks at Restaurant Row just can't wait for Monday to hold a Cinco de Mayo, so they're holding a Tres de Mayo celebration on Saturday. Granted, Goya created a famous painting called Tres de Mayo, but it was about a bloody war, and not a bloody mary (or margarita) party such as you'll find at the Row. Yes, lots of Mexican food and drink, jalapeno eating contests and pinata breaking, plus music by Dita Holifield and D'Tour South, plus Tex-Mex entrees by 808 at no charge. What, no salsa music? For that you apparently have to wait until Cinco de Mayo ...
