A preview of movies opening this weekend:
"The Lizzie McGuire Movie" >> Disney Channel darling Hilary Duff takes tweeny-boppers' favorite girl next door to the big screen. Lizzie (and her animated alter ego) celebrates her graduation from junior high with a summer class trip to Italy -- and gets mistaken for a local pop star. Soon her folks are jetting across the Atlantic to set her straight. (PG)
"X2: X-Men United" >> New mutants (including Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler) and new villains (Brian Cox's mutant-fearing general, William Stryker) up the fight ante established in the hugely successful first X-Men movie. Director Bryan Singer and his massive all-star cast return in a story line that has Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his young mutant students persecuted by the vengeful Stryker. Supervillain Magneto (Ian McKellan) is also back, and the vicious Lady Deathstrike (Kelly Hu) is out to get Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). (PG)
Singer, Hu and writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris will be participating in a free panel discussion at 6 p.m. May 9 at the University of Hawaii-Manoa Campus Center Ballroom. The event will be hosted by Chris Lee, founding co-director of the university's Cinematic and Digital Arts Program. Clips of the movie will be shown, followed by a question-and-answer session with the panelists. For more information, call 956-2501.
