Yesterday's picks
Team-by-team draft
Lauvale Sape was told by many he'd get a chance to play in the NFL, but most said it would be via the free-agent route. When he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills yesterday in the sixth round with the 187th overall pick, it was a very pleasant surprise for the former Leilehua star who played collegiately at Utah.
"This is shocking for me. I have wanted to play in the league for a long time and a lot of people didn't think I was going to get drafted," said Sape, a 6-foot-1, 297-pound defensive tackle who still calls Wahiawa home.
Another local athlete, Kamehameha graduate Makoa Freitas, was also picked in the sixth round. The Indianapolis Colts chose him with the 208th overall pick.
If bloodlines have anything to do with it, the 6-4, 307-pound offensive lineman who played at Arizona could be in for a long, productive career. His father is Rockne Freitas, one of the best linemen to ever come out of Hawaii. Rockne Freitas had a 12-year NFL career that included All-Pro status.
"Growing up with an NFL dad helped, and he didn't put any pressure on me," Makoa Freitas said. "He let me follow my own path."
Freitas said the Colts might want him to go back to playing guard. He started his Arizona career splitting time at the position with Stephen Grace, another Kamehameha grad. Freitas later moved to left tackle.
An unprecedented (for the first day) three University of Hawaii players were picked Saturday. It was not a surprise that linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa and offensive linemen Vince Manuwai and Wayne Hunter were chosen, but the order of their selection was to most.
Tinoisamoa went first, in the second round, as the St. Louis Rams took him with the 43rd pick of the draft. Manuwai and Hunter went 72nd and 73rd, Manuwai to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Hunter to the Seattle Seahawks.
Brown, Gesser sign: Former UH linebacker Chris Brown, who was not drafted, signed a free-agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens late last night.
Washington State's All-Pac-10 quarterback Jason Gesser (Saint Louis School) also went undrafted, but signed with the Tennessee Titans last night.
UH punter Mat McBriar and offensive lineman Lui Fuata will likely be offered free-agent tryouts in the coming days.
McBriar is negotiating with the Denver Broncos. Two former UH players, place-kicker Jason Elam and wideout Ashley Lelie, already play for the Broncos.
