Kennelly crushes Clark
in Roxy Pro Fiji final

Keala Kennelly of Kauai easily beat Heather Clark of South Africa 11.83-6.10 in the final of the Roxy Pro at Tavarua, Fiji, yesterday.

Kennelly and Clark split the first two waves before Kennelly totally took over, winning the next eight. She only needed her best five waves, though, allowing her to take the top spot in the world rankings and earn the $10,600 first prize.

"I'm so stoked," Kennelly said. "It's unfortunate the conditions got worse as soon as the final started, as when you win an event you hope it turns on and is an awesome final. Heather's an incredible surfer and she's been ripping all day. I can't believe it."

Clark earned the highest combined total during the quarterfinals with 16.5 points.

Kennelly got to the final by beating Sofia Mulanovich while Clark took care of rookie of the year Chelsea Georgeson.

Kennelly was left to carry the flag for Hawaii after the third round when Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo both bowed out.

Abubo lost to Mulanovich 14-34-10.5 and Ballard fell to Lynette Mckenzie 16.33-13.9.

Layne Beachley, who is tied with Kennelly at the top of the ratings, suffered the biggest upset in the third round, losing to Caroline Sarran of France 16-12.5.

"I had a hell of a lot of bad luck out there today," Beachley said.

Rainbow Wahine finish MPSF in seventh

STANFORD, Calif. >> Amber Lumb had seven saves and Chelsea Garner-Prohs and Beth Novick each scored two goals to give the Hawaii water polo team a 7-4 win over UC Santa Barbara in the seventh-place game of the MPSF tournament yesterday.

Lumb's defense limited the Gauchos to a single goal in the first half, but her offense could only manage a pair of goals.

The Wahine end their season at 6-8 in the MPSF and 12-14 overall.

Bremler breaks UH record in 1,500 meters

SAN DIEGO >> Hanna Bremler set a Hawaii record in the 1,500 meters at the UC San Diego Invitational track and field meet yesterday.

Bremler was timed in four minutes, 29.98 seconds in the run, moving her up to fifth in the conference at the distance. She used the momentum to also win the 3,000-meter run.

The Wahine also had personal bests from Jordana Whittington (800 meters, 2:17.14), Teryn Bentley (1,500, 5:09.24; 3,000, 11:08.27), Robin McRobbie (3,000, 10:43.43), Shayne Enright (3,000, 11:41.96), Lana Phillips (400 hurdles, 1:11.20), Nicole Wright (long jump, 4.83 meters), Kristin Ray (shot put, 11.34 meters), Alexis Fredrick (discus, 37.41 meters) and the 4x400 relay team (4:11.66).
