Reunions to go

The Ka'anapali Ali'i is making it easier for clans to plan get-togethers, with Family Reunion Specialists on staff to oversee accommodations.

The specialists at the luxury condominium property will share their knowledge of Maui and activities available, to create custom packages for multi-generational reunions.

Call 1-800-642-6284.

Head to the gardens

Dole Plantation started something new in Central Oahu. Complementing its Pineapple Garden Maze and Pineapple Express train ride is a Plantation Garden experience that takes visitors through eight mini-gardens focusing on such themes as "Native Species," "North Shore Agriculture," "Ti Leaf," "Lei" and "Hibiscus."

Learn about local agriculture and native flora while gaining insight about plantation life and the contract laborers who came from around the world to build Hawaii's agricultural industries and in turn contributed to its melting-pot culture.

Garden tours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $3.50 for adults, $3 for kamaaina and military, $2.50 for ages 4 to 12, and free for those under age 4 when accompanied by an adult. Special rates are available for groups, school and other educational groups.

The plantation is at 64-1550 Kamehameha Highway. Visit www.dole-plantation.com.

Hostel takeover

If you're looking for an inexpensive place to board the halau during the next Merrie Monarch contest or for any other Big Island jaunt, consider the Hilo Bay Hostel, where prices start at $18 per person. The hostel accommodates up to 50.

Noncommunal-living types may prefer to book a private room instead of the dorm-style rooms. A private room for one is $38; for two, $48.

The building at 101 Waianuenue Ave., built as a hotel in 1913, is described as the oldest surviving wooden structure on the island. Renovations include new baths and showers. The original grand wooden staircase and 13-foot ceiling retain past charms while such modern amenities as Internet access and cable TV address modern travelers' needs.

Call (808) 933-2771 or go online at www.hawaiihostel.net.
