PHILADELPHIA >> Waipahu's Jerome Williams was more than a little nervous about starting his first major league game for the San Francisco Giants in Philadelphia yesterday.
But he did a good job of spreading the feeling around to the other dugout in the Giants' 10-2 loss at Veterans Stadium.
"It was fun, but in the beginning I was so nervous," Williams said. "I was throwing in the pen and (catcher) Benito (Santiago) came up to me and told me all types of stuff that I can't remember now, I was so nervous."
Williams made his first trip through a major league lineup look easy, going through the first seven batters without allowing a hit. He said his nervousness left him after second batter Ricky Ledee topped an easy grounder back to him on the mound.
Williams struck out Pat Burrell swinging in the second inning after a long foul ball for his first major league strikeout, and surrendered an infield single to Tomas Perez in the third to give up his first hit. Then Santiago took a ball off the elbow from Phillies starter Brandon Duckworth and had to leave the game. Williams' effectiveness left with him.
With Yorvit Torrealba, who caught Williams when he was promoted to Double-A, behind the plate, the Phillies scored three runs despite hitting only one ball out of the infield. Williams walked the bases loaded with one out and then walked Todd Pratt to force in a run. Perez followed with an infield single, scoring Jim Thome, and Duckworth singled to center, Philadelphia's first hit to the outfield, to score David Bell.
Williams then got back-to-back groundouts, including a nice play by J.T. Snow at first that cut off a run.
The Phillies added two runs in the fifth. Consecutive singles by Bobby Abreu and Burrell chased Williams out of the game. Reliever Jim Brower got Thome on a lineout before Bell doubled home Abreu, and Pratt singled to score Burrell.
"It was kind of difficult with the new catcher, but that isn't an excuse," Williams said. "I just wasn't finishing my pitches. Everything I threw was up."
Williams was sent back to Triple-A Fresno in favor of left-hander Jeff Urban after the game, but vowed he'd be back later this season. Santiago agreed.
"He showed me he has very good control," Santiago said. "He's going to be fine. The kid showed me the first three innings that he can do it. The first day you tend to be nervous, but he was hitting my target pretty good."
Williams said he was more nervous about the surroundings than the opposing hitters, because he believes that if he makes his pitches he can get through any lineup.
"It is just better hitters," Williams said. "The good thing is that I don't realize who I am facing until after the game. If I ever think about Thome or Abreu during the game I would be even more nervous."
Abreu homered, scored four runs and knocked in three. Thome also homered and drove in two runs for the Phillies, who have won four of five. Abreu is 9-for-19 with nine RBIs and seven runs scored in his last five games.
Duckworth (1-1) walked three and struck out two. He threw 99 pitches, including 34 in the first inning when the Giants loaded the bases but did not score.
"I was bound and determined to get out of that inning," Duckworth said. "I told myself that it was time to show something here."
The loss snapped the Giants' three-game winning streak, but their 18-5 start still matches their best since moving to San Francisco in 1958 -- tying the 1962 and 1971 teams.
Carlos Silva pitched four innings for his first save this season and the second of his career.
Barry Bonds went 0-for-3 and was hit by a pitch.
