Monis takes
show to Scotland


Michael Monis is one of five bodybuilders from the United States invited to compete in the World Bodybuilding Championships in Scotland.

The Hawaii Kai resident is a graduate of Waianae High School, the 20-year veteran credits football coach Larry Ginoza as being an inspiration for him to pursue a life in sports.

Some of his victories through the years include national titles for Mr. Europe World Natural, Mr. Pro U.S.A., Mr. Musclemania, Mr. California Grand Prix, Mr. Hawaiian International, Mr. Pacific International and Mr. 50th State.

The international competition begins June 14.

Aztecs edge Rainbow Wahine

Malia Tarayao scored a fourth quarter goal to bring the Hawaii water polo team within a goal of tying, but San Diego State shut the Wahine down the rest of the way to take an 8-7 win in a consolation game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament.

Karin van Hoff and Darcy Scott-Hosaka led the Wahine, who outscored the Aztecs 6-4 in the second half, with two goals each.

The Wahine will get a chance to finish the tournament in seventh place if they can beat UC Santa Barbara today.

Beston boosts UH Golf into seventh place

PROVO, Utah >> Hawaii golfer James Beston tied for third place with a 71 on the final day of the Ping Golf Cougar Classic yesterday, helping the Warriors to a tie for seventh place with Wyoming.

Beston recovered from a 76 in the second round to finish the tournament in 12th place with a 219, 10 strokes behind medalist Martin Laird of Colorado State. The Buffaloes won the team competition with a 857 while the Warriors scored 896 points.

Kellen Floyd Asao was Hawaii's second highest scorer, shooting a 223 over the three days of the tournament.

Wahine ousted from tennis tourney

The Hawaii women's tennis team ended its season with a loss yesterday, dropping out of the WAC tournament with a 4-0 loss to No. 22 Fresno State.

Paige Minor, Mio Fukushima and Kimberly Curtis gave up the points in the singles after the Bulldogs swept the doubles.

The Wahine finish the season with an 11-13 record.

Hawaii's McRobbie wins steeplechase

SAN DIEGO >> Robin McRobbie won the 3,000 meter steeplechase and broke her own school record at the first day of competition at the UC San Diego Invitational yesterday.

McRobbie, a junior transfer from Louisiana-Monroe, ran the distance in 11 minutes and 6.35 seconds to win the event by 15 seconds and beat her own school record by four seconds. McRobbie is ranked fourth in the event in the Western Athletic Conference but should rise after winning this meet.

The only other UH athlete to compete on the first day was Alexis Frederick in the hammer throw. Frederick set a personal best with a throw of 34.7 meters, but was only good enough to place 29th.

The meet continues today.

Murphy, ILH coaches to meet at QB Club

Punahou girls basketball coach Mike Taylor will join Iolani baseball coach Dean Yonamine and catcher Kala Ka'aihue at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's meeting tomorrow.

Na Koa president and UH booster Don Murphy will also be on hand for the event, which begins at noon at the Pagoda restaurant in Honolulu. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.
