The Honolulu Star-Bulletin won 18 awards -- more than any other Hawaii publication -- in the Hawaii Publishers Association Pa'i Awards for 2002.

The Pa'i Award winners were announced in 31 categories for print publications yesterday at an awards ceremony at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom. The Honolulu Advertiser won 15 awards, seven of them for first place.

MidWeek was No. 1 in the Best Non-daily Newspaper category. Judges said the weekly publication won "for its broad readership appeal." MidWeek and the Star-Bulletin are owned by MidWeek Printing Inc. The Star-Bulletin's six first-place winners were:

>> Editorial writer Cynthia Oi in the Editorial Feature category for "Where Rene Went Wrong." Judges said, "Cynthia Oi pulled no punches, but manages to do this story in an even-handed manner as she reports on (former City Councilwoman Rene) Mansho's blatant, perhaps naive misuse of power."

>> Graphic artist Bryant Fukutomi in the Excellence in Illustration category for "Power Serge," featuring golfer Sergio Garcia and previewing the Sony Open. Judges said the photo illustration "conveyed the message using size and manipulation with scenic landscape to perfectly position the reader."

>> Big Island correspondent Rod Thompson, photographer Ken Ige, Deputy City Editor Chuck Parker, Assistant Editor Mike Rovner, and graphic artists Dave Swann and Kip Aoki won in the Editorial Series category for "Going with the Flow: Kilauea's 20-year Eruption." The judges said, "This series is a marvelous combination of narration and dynamic graphics that, together, describe both dangerous and welcome fire."

>> Dennis Oda's photograph of the family of Kahealani Indreginal won in the Spot news Photography category. Judges said the photograph "captured the anguish and torment a family experiences when a loved one is kidnapped."

>> Rovner won in the Excellence in Design category for layout of the "Duke Kahanamoku Stamp" package. Judges said: The stunning design and photos immediately draw the reader into the story."

>> Rovner and Swann won in the Excellence in Informational Graphics category for "Mt. Waialeale." Judges said, "Visually attractive, colorful graphics are executed nicely." The Star-Bulletin swept this category.
