Moanalua grabs
top OIA seed with
win over Kalaheo

Any doubts that Moanalua is the team to beat in Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball were put to rest last night.

With all phases of their game working, the Menehunes knocked off five-time defending league champion Kalaheo 60-50 at the Mustangs' gym.

Senior Marleen Leautu owned the middle for the Menehunes, scoring a game-high 17 points, controlling the boards and blocking a handful of Kalaheo shots.

"Maturity made a big difference," the 6-foot Leautu said. "We're a lot older than them and we have more experience with the game.

"I feel good about our chances. I think our team can go really far. We're halfway there."

The Menehunes are 9-0 and have secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming OIA playoffs.

"Leautu had her way around the basket," said Mustangs coach Chico Furtado, whose team dropped to 6-3. "I think it says a lot that they came here and beat us. They're a good, very athletic team with multiple people who can attack the basket."

Amy Kotani, who returned from an ankle injury, gave the Menehunes a boost with two 3-pointers en route to 13 points, while fellow senior Patti Hardimon played her usual unselfish game, finishing with 10 points and a bundle of assists.

Moanalua led from start to finish, but Kalaheo trailed by just five, 22-17, late in the second quarter. The halftime lead ballooned to 28-19 as Kotani hit a baseline 3-point swish and Leautu made three of four from the line.

But the game was won early in the third quarter, as Kepua Lee scored all seven of her points during the Menehunes' spirited 16-0 run for an insurmountable 44-19 bulge.

"We had some mental lapses in that third period," said Kalaheo sophomore Taylor Smith, who finished with a team-high 15 points. "I don't know what we were doing. We fell apart and gave them a huge lead. It might have been a different game if we didn't have that lapse, because we eventually cut it to 10 points."

Smith scored nine points and Shaina Siliga added six as the Mustangs outscored the Menehunes 25-14 in the final period.

"It was a close game just before the half when we were down by six, and we talked about coming out strong in the second half, but everything we talked about didn't work," Furtado said.

Moanalua coach Roy Dias said his girls played well, but that they can play better.

"We were pounding it inside because Kalaheo was in foul trouble," he said. "For us to be clicking, we've got to try and be balanced. That's when we play our best.

"Patti (Hardimon), if she's not doing one thing, she's doing something else. She does so much. And Amy really helped open up the game for us with her 3s."
