Honolulu Hale to host tribute to crime victims

A tribute to crime victims and survivors will be held at the Honolulu Hale courtyard Friday from noon to 1 p.m.

Those who are interested in attending the event are encouraged to bring flowers.

The tribute has been held annually in Honolulu for the last 17 years as part of the National Crime Victims' Rights Week. A photo exhibit called "Faces of Rape and Sexual Abuse Survivors" will be displayed until the end of the month at the third-floor gallery of Honolulu Hale starting tomorrow.

The photo exhibit was initiated by award-winning photojournalist Noboku Oyabu, who will be the featured speaker at the tribute. Oyabu -- a rape victim -- has dedicated herself to her photo exhibition tour full time.

Other speakers include Tip and Jeannie Gilbert, whose 6-year-old daughter, Maile, was abducted from her Kailua home in 1985 by a family acquaintance and killed; Theresa Paulette Winn, former president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, whose son was killed in a car accident involving a drunk driver; and Nadine Onodera, founder of the Hawaii Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children, whose son was shot and killed at their Hawaii Kai home.

Hawaiian Home Lands to sell seized property

HILO >> Six people atop the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands' waiting list will be offered Hilo residences that were seized in February.

The department is preparing to sell the residences, taken from lessees who refused to pay mortgages, taxes and water bills as part of a protest.

Those who buy the houses will get a new 99-year lease at the standard rate of $1 per year, department spokesman Francis Apoliona said.

The department will keep the money it is owed and return any extra funds to the former lessees, Apoliona said.

Department officials have said five of the six former lessees failed to make a combined $250,000 in mortgage payments over a six-year period.

All had tampered with county water meters, and some or all had withheld payment of their county property taxes, the officials said.

At the time of the evictions, Hawaiian Home Lands Director Micah Kane said the state had exhausted all its options after offering different repayment and refinancing options.

Escaped killer nabbed in Maine motel

A man picked up at a Portland, Maine, motel for criminal trespassing investigation turned out to be a convicted murderer who fled Hawaii.

James Duquette, 53, has escaped from several lockups in Hawaii, the last time being in the mid-1990s.

He was arrested Friday after officers were called to the Travelodge motel in Portland where Duquette, using the name John Sutton, was refusing to leave, Portland police said. Duquette attacked three officers and was jailed, police said.

Duquette gave police several different names and dates of birth, but police discovered his identity through a fingerprints check with the FBI. He will be held in Portland until his extradition to Hawaii.

Duquette was convicted of strangling a 25-year-old woman in 1978, and he was serving a 20-year sentence when he walked away from a supervised work assignment in 1980.

During that escape, he went to a hotel, where he robbed and kidnapped three guests. A year later, he was sentenced to life in prison on two robbery counts and concurrent 20-year terms for assault and kidnapping.

Rock-tossing on H-1 gets suspect arrested

Police arrested an 18-year-old Moanalua man Saturday who they said was one of five males who threw rocks from a pedestrian overpass onto the H-1 freeway. The rocks were thrown from the overpass near Stadium Mall and Radford High School about 2:30 a.m., police said.

The rocks damaged six cars traveling Waianae-bound on the freeway, police said. Police believe the same five suspects damaged four cars about the same time Friday morning. The damage included smashed windshields and dents, police said. No one was injured.

A patrol officer spotted the 18-year-old man in the Aliamanu housing area and arrested him for investigation of six counts of first-degree criminal property damage. Police were still looking for the five other suspects last night.

Police said the Buick driver left the scene but returned later. He was arrested and released pending investigation.

Police said alcohol may have contributed to the accident.
