THIS YEAR'S event successfully continued on the success of last year's Ho'olaule'a, which was filled with popular local bands such as Natural Vibrations. This event not only brought students, faculty and family together, it was also a chance for students to display their school spirit and pride.

After a kickoff gym rally hosted by the Higher, Faster, Stronger Team with fabulous entertainment and prizes, everyone rushed to the food booths, the White Elephant Auction and to the stage area where listeners enjoyed some soothing local tunes. The variety of foods expressed the diversity that makes the islands so unique. The sugary sweet malasadas, bread sticks, sandwiches, crispy fried chicken, dim sum and fried noodles made it difficult for onlookers to resist the temptation of just "sampling" each delightful treat. The pillow-soft cotton candy, icy cool shave ice, popcorn and kakimochi highlighted the superbly delicious local cuisine.

The entertainment was satisfying to ears that were hungry for good music. The first band, the Ho'onu'a duo, helped everyone enjoy the evening by playing some of the crowd's favorite reggae and Hawaiian-infused tunes from their previous albums. In addition, new songs from their upcoming album received rave reviews from the listeners. After the band's energetic opening, there were opportunities for participants to win prizes by playing games such as Frisbee toss, singing contests and a "speaking with a mouth full of malasadas" contest.

The next act was Jon Yamasato, a former member of the hit band Pure Heart. He captivated the crowd with some smooth and groovy island sounds such as "How Can I Get Over" and "Let's Get Together and Be All Right."

The responses to this year's event were very positive, to say the least. Juniors Joanie Hobson and Katrina Perry said: "The Ho'olaule'a was very entertaining. All of the groups performed well. Even though it rained a bit, it was fun! ... Can't wait until next year!" Please continue to support the MPI community and local music so that we can continue what we hope to be a long-term tradition for all to enjoy!
