HPU swept on diamond
CARSON, Calif. >> Cal State Dominguez Hills pitcher Brian Cortes silenced the Hawaii Pacific bats to lead the Toros to a 4-0 win over the Sea Warriors and a sweep of yesterday's baseball doubleheader.
Cortes limited HPU (22-18) to seven hits in a complete-game performance. David Zamarano took the loss for HPU.
CSUDH (23-23) scored five runs in the fourth inning to edge HPU 6-5 in the first game. HPU's Ikaika Dupont and Alika Kuraoka drove in two runs each.
Sea Warriors rally for softball split
Hawaii Pacific scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Azusa Pacific 5-4 and earn a softball split yesterday in Kaneohe.
APU (38-16) won the first game 5-4. Brandy Choy Foo homered for HPU (26-20).
Washed out: Hawaii-Hilo's home finale was canceled due to rain yesterday. The Vulcans were scheduled to play Biola in a doubleheader.
The games will not be rescheduled.
James Burns given Ushijima Award
Chief Judge James S. Burns has been named this year's recipient of the Charlie Ushijima Rainbow Service Award.
Burns has worked with Ahahui Koa Anuenue, the University of Hawaii's athletic booster club, since its creation in 1967 and has served as president since 1977. The club has raised $12.5 million for the UH Athletic Scholarship Fund during his tenure as president.
The award is presented annually to recognize a volunteer's service to the UH athletic department.
Burns will be honored in two ceremonies today. The first will be held before the UH baseball game with Fresno State at Les Murakami Stadium. Another ceremony will be held during the Warrior men's volleyball match with Pacific at the Stan Sheriff Center.
