Hawaiian Islanders quarterback Darnell Arceneaux has been hired as quarterbacks coach for the McKinley High School football team, new head coach William Moeava said yesterday.

Arceneaux, the former Saint Louis School and Utah standout, has a chance to eventually become offensive coordinator for the Tigers.

"We've been doing some sprint conditioning and Darnell has been there," Moeava said. "He's a real smart guy and he knows his stuff."

Arceneaux will be working with elusive and accurate McKinley starting quarterback Abel Werner, last year's Gatorade State Player of the Year, who will be a senior this fall.

"I think Abel will benefit from Darnell's knowledge of the game," Moeava said. "Abel is already amazed at what he's learned from Darnell in the last couple of days. Abel pretty much has the mental part of the game down, and Darnell will be helping him with footwork and fundamentals.

"We're looking at Darnell to be a big key and a big help in our offense this year."

Last year, the Tigers went 9-5 under coach David Tanuvasa, who stepped down after the season. They qualified for the state tournament for the first time, but lost in triple overtime in the semifinals to Castle.

Arceneaux is in his second season as the Islanders' starter, and he has guided the arenafootball2 team to a 2-0 start.

Kawachi to help out: Moanalua's Joel Kawachi said yesterday -- a few days after he announced he was stepping down as head coach of the Menehunes' boys and girls teams -- that he's going to still be involved with wrestling.

"I'm not leaving the sport," he said. "I won't be head coach, but I'll still be involved -- promoting and giving advice."

Kawachi is a teacher and assistant athletic director for the Menehunes.

"Our program is in a good place," he said. "I feel good about where we are and I thought it was a good time to step aside and give someone else a chance to come in."

Kawachi led the Moanalua girls to three state titles -- in 1999, 2000 and 2001. He also coached several highly successful wrestlers, including Caylene Valdez, who became the first Hawaii girl to win her fourth straight state individual championship in March, and three-time state champion Stephany Lee.

"There isn't one specific thing that I'm most proud of," he said. "I'm just happy to see kids come through the program and to see some kids who weren't planning on going to college actually go on to wrestle in college and get a degree."

Kawachi, who will turn 33 in November, also said it was gratifying to have seen some former Moanalua wrestlers come back to help out the program.

"We were able to reach all of our goals except one -- a boys OIA title," he said. "But two years ago we were one match away from doing that, so we came really close."

Christian to Tulane: Leilehua distance swimmer Leslie Christian was recruited by Tulane and will become a member of the Green Wave swimming team.

"On a visit in March, she fell in love with the school and New Orleans and chose Tulane for its academic reputation and also because she really believes in head coach Danielle Irle," said Christian's mom, Laura Christian.
