Okoye clinics
more than physical
Former NFL All-Pro Christian Okoye is set to put on free "Idea and Sports Festival" football and soccer clinics for kids ages 8-18 June 28 and 29 at Mililani High School.
More than 12 former pro football players are scheduled to attend to interact with the kids, Okoye said.
"I have a bunch of my friends coming out to help," he said of the list that includes Hall of Famers Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen and Jim Kelly, as well as Jim McMahon. "It's too much for me, so I get help from my friends."
The clinics will be non-contact, stressing fundamentals, form and technique.
The "Idea" aspect will include computer classes and volunteer tutors with sessions in math, graphic arts, health, drug education and safety.
Though the clinics are open to all, Okoye is aiming for the kids who may need a leg up.
"I feel fortunate," he said. "I feel blessed. So because I feel blessed I want to tell my story to the kids who are in my position when I was young. So they know they can be like me, they can be like other athletes. They can make it if they try. That's my message."
In order to keep the clinics free, Okoye is putting on a golf tournament, also hosted by the former pro players, on June 30 at the Koolau Golf Club.
