Roosevelt’s Mead
overpowers Kalaheo

Southpaw Kaimi Mead was in the groove and so was the vocal Roosevelt bench.

As a result, the close-knit Rough Riders (4-0) remained unbeaten in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division with a 5-1 baseball victory over previously undefeated Kalaheo (4-1) yesterday at Kailua District Park.

With a bat-bending curveball, Mead struck out 14 Mustangs and went the distance for a four-hitter.

"He's a great pitcher," Kalaheo coach Alex Racoma said about Mead, who is a transfer from Saint Louis School and is heading to Hawaii on a baseball scholarship. "He has a great, live arm. We weren't disciplined at the plate at all. Maybe we'll get to see him again if we can make the playoffs. To be the best, you've gotta beat the best."

Mead struggled in the first inning, but walked off the mound unscathed by pitching out of a bases-loaded jam.

"I wasn't completely warmed up," he said. "After that, I was just hitting my spots and comfortable in knowing the team was going to come through behind me."

Kalaheo committed five errors, with three of them proving costly. Still, the Mustangs trailed just 2-1 going into the sixth inning.

"It could have been a lot different," Racoma said. "But our mental attitude wasn't there. They (the Rough Riders) beat us in mental attitude. You could hear them chirping."

It wasn't a Broadway musical, but the players in the Roosevelt dugout never ceased in humming their encouraging tunes.

"We want them to back each other up," Rough Riders coach Kerry Higa said. "We want them to know that everybody on the team is important and it's good to do some cheering to pick everybody up.

"We also know it's a fine line between being all pumped up and what some people might think is derogatory to the other team. We talked to the boys and we'll be monitoring them to make sure they don't say anything that could be interpreted the wrong way."

Roosevelt's Ivan Fujii singled and eventually scored the game's first run on a wild pitch in the third inning. Derek Shigano walked and later crossed the plate with what turned out to be the winning run on Kalaheo's first error.
