KSSK winner will
get hero’s welcome

IMENTIONED earlier that Perry & Price Hanohano Room show producer Sweetie Pacarro was given the many thousands of dollars her mom won from a Las Vegas slot machine that was one of Sweetie's favorites, and now another nice story has come out of that trip. Some 30 contest winners of the KSSK show hosted by Michael W. Perry and Larry Price were transported to Vegas via Hawaiian Airlines which provided complimentary round-trip accommodations, but one winner wasn't able to join in the Vegas fun -- he and his unit had already been deployed to the Middle East due to the Iraqi conflict. A winner is a winner and upon his return home, Hawaiian will be offering him a round-trip ticket to Vegas ...

APPEARING on the P&P show from Vegas was Cec Heftel's son, Richard Heftel, who now lives there. He showed up wearing a KSSK jean jacket from the '80s when he worked at the station. Along with running a club at the Venetian, he's also the new music industry relations manager for Hispanic Broadcasting ...

Diesel power

THE hunk of "XXX," Vin Diesel, was once romantically linked to Mariah Carey, but is now dating a Panamanian beauty some describe as a Carey look-alike. She's 23-year-old Lisa Hernandez, and there's even a local connection. Lisa was first runner-up in the Miss Hawaii Tropic International World Finals held at Turtle Bay last year. If Diesel's motor gets revving for her, you have to wonder what the winner must look like ...

WHEN UH president Evan Dobelle introduced Yukiko Sugihara at the Japanese Cultural Center, he revealed something little known about his roots. Sugihara's husband, the late Chiune Sugihara, was Japan's consul general in Kovna, Lithuania, who issued live-saving transit visas to an estimated 6,000 Polish Jews in August of 1940, against the orders of the foreign ministry. In his introduction, Dobelle revealed he had Lithuanian roots and several members of his family were killed during the Holocaust ...

DONATIONS to help in the education needs of the two children of killed HPD officer Glen Gaspar are still being welcomed and can be delivered to any First Hawaiian Bank branch. The Hickam branch recently was given a $641 donation from Naval Criminal Investigative Service. This, despite the fact that many members of that unit are currently deployed in the Middle East ...

Spammy

THAT "Wall of Spam" at Restaurant Row, co-sponsored by the Star-Bulletin, is more than just a gimmick to break the record set in the Minnesota, the city that is home to Hormel. When broken down, the many cans of Spam that form the wall will be donated to the Hawaii Foodbank. Tomorrow is the big kick-off and slated to attend is "Spammy," the mascot for Hormel, maker of the food that is No. 1 on the Foodbank wish list. The public is invited to bring cans of Spam to the Row through April 19, with prizes going to those donating the most Spam ...
