50 Cent raps
here May 27

GO SHORTY, it's your birthday: He's 26 years old, has survived being shot nine times and sold more than 2 million copies of his major label debut "Get Rich or Die Tryin" during its first month of release. Now rapper 50 Cent, who brags on his album that he's "got the rap game in a chokehold," has set his sights on Hawaii.

Tickets go on sale next Saturday for the May 27 show at the Blaisdell Arena, and fellow hip-hop artist Fabolous is scheduled to join 50 Cent on stage. Surf over to goldenvoice.com later this week for more info on the concert and keep listening to local radio stations for a chance to win tickets ...

IT WAS a night of celebrations yesterday at Aloha Tower Marketplace. Kelly De Lima and the rest of Kapena celebrated the release of their latest album, "Won't Stop Now" at Gordon Biersch. The new CD marks a slight change in the band's line-up; Kelly's son Kapena De Lima performs on a regular basis now, and Kainoa DeLo has replaced founding member Tiva Tatofi.

Over at Kapono's, it was the 2003 Hawaii Music Awards, with entertainment by B.E.T. featuring Katana, Five by 5, Simplicity, Kawika Regidor. Native Blend and others. Organized by Johnny Kai, the Hawaii Music Awards recognized artists in a variety of categories and collected over 250,000 ballots over the Internet to help decide a winner of the "People's Choice Award" ...

ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY celebration to let you know about: Head over to the Ala Moana Hotel on Thursday to help celebrate two years of "Salsa After Dark" at Rumours Nightclub. While Latin music has staged a comeback of sorts over the past year with new promoters and club nights popping up around town, "Salsa After Dark" has been a mainstay on the scene for folks who want to learn more about salsa dancing and practice their moves.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Thursday for the 21-and-over crowd, and Salsa 101 offers a free one-hour lesson starting at 6:30 p.m. Son Caribe will perform during the evening, and DJs Ray Cruz, Roberto and Rod will keep things going on the dance floor until 2 a.m. If you're looking for a glimpse into the world of salsa, "Salsa After Dark" is a low-pressure method of learning a few new moves and getting a chance to practice them right away; call 941-5216 for more information. Congrats to the night's promoters for two successful years ...
