Edgy filmmaker needs
hot cash to wrap ice film

FILMMAKER Edgy Lee isn't afraid to take on topics that are, well, edgy. Her current project has a working title of "Hawaii's Ice Epidemic," and, needless to say, isn't akin to the kind of road conditions effecting certain areas of the mainland. The film will deal quite candidly with people on ice, crystal methamphetamine, mothers having their children taken from them due to their addiction at birth, etc. Six TV stations have agreed to show the film simultaneously on Aug. 28. Money is needed to help finish the film, and the Pacific Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization, is accepting tax deductible donations of $150 and up. TWO Hapas should be better than one. Ever since that wonderful duet of Barry Flanagan and Kelii Kanealii broke up, each has been in search of a winning musical combination. Now Flanagan has come up with a contemporary Hapa, teaming this time with Nathan Naoua and Kanealii has linked up with Bobby Ingano after a tour of Japan. Both the new Hapa and Kelii's duo have one thing in common. Both still love playing at Chai's Island Bistro where they entertained together for so long beginning four years ago. Barry's Hapa will be back at Chai's on Friday, April 18, and Kelii's duo will return there on Sunday nights, beginning April 27. Chai's summer lineup is very impressive -- besides the above, performing there will be ukulele magician Jake Shimabukuro, Olomana's Jerry Santos and the Brothers Cazimero ...

B.B. -- no, not Bardot

HAWAII'S own B.B. is actually Beebee, as in Freitas. An accomplished pianist and organist, Beebee, who is associate artistic director at the Hawaii Opera Theatre, has found the spotlight once again. She was recently honored by Honpa Hongwanji Mission which declared her one of Hawaii's "Living Treasures," and the accolades didn't stop there. She was also honored by the City Commission on Culture and the Arts in recognition of her contributions to the cultural and artistic landscape of the community. Beebee was in good company at that awards celebration; other honorees included Nona Beamer and Dances We Dance ...

YOUNG writer/producer Andrew Meader was so pleased with the cabaret show "Seduction," which he staged at the Arts at Mark's Garage, that he's mulling a new one to open Aug. 28. He's not sure who'll be in it, but one idea he has is "Songs You Love from Shows You Didn't." ... Ron Jacobs, glued as so many folks are to Iraqi war news, still manages to attempt to find humor in the situation. For example, he forsees a "rassling" program featuring Kurdish Iaukea ...
