Star-Bulletin staffer's memorial tomorrow

A memorial service for George Steele, a Honolulu Star-Bulletin staff member for 22 years, will be held at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Kakaako Waterfront Park. Steele, 56, died last month.

The former West Virginia native joined the Star-Bulletin in 1981 and worked as a wire editor and copy editor. Tomorrow's service will be held at the Cooke Street end of the park. A scattering of ashes will be held later on the mainland.



Bibiano Sobremonte "Benny" Catbagan, 79, of Honolulu, died Wednesday in St. Francis Medical Center. He was born in San Fernando, La Union, the Philippines. He is survived by wife Pauline; daughters Zenaida Popaca, Jane Galase, Leilani Fitzgerald and Imelda Catbagan; brother Manuel; sister Ascuncion DeGuzman; and five grandchildren. Services: 6:30 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. Friday at Diamond Head Mortuary. Call after 6 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. Friday. Burial to follow at Diamond Head Memorial Park. Casual attire.

The Rev. Theodore Kamasuke Chinen, 99, of Honolulu, a retired minister for Oahu Prison, died Friday in Kuakini Medical Center. He was born in Okinawa, Japan. He is survived by daughter Dorinda R. Teruya, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services: 6 p.m. Thursday at Manoa Valley Church. Call after 5 p.m. Casual attire. No flowers.

Kanichi Funamura, 91, of Koloa, Kauai, a retired Koloa School custodian, died March 27 at home. He was born in Kukuiula, Kauai. He is survived by wife Ayako, son Harry, sister Francis Kanekiyo and two grandchildren. Private services.

Tomie Harada, 80, of Mountain View, Hawaii, a homemaker, died March 27 in Hilo Medical Center. She was born in Honolulu. She is survived by daughter Linda Harada-Stone, brother Douglas Hishinuma, sister Alice Miura and two grandchildren. Services: 3 p.m. Sunday at Puna Hongwanji Mission. Kaniela Kaikaiokalani Nash Kanimau, 18, of Honolulu, died Saturday in Honolulu. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by parents Danny and Pua, brothers Hoku Peneku and Dean Chung, sisters Amela Chung and Tricia Peneku, and grandparents Daniel Kanimau Sr. and Reginald and Haunani Nash. Rosalina Ilaban "Rosal" Lacuesta, 84, of Waipahu, died Thursday at home. She was born in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines. She is survived by husband Andres; daughters Teresita Basuel, Patricia Okino, Mary Andres and Lisa Lopez; sister Josefina Ilaban; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Brian Laguisan, 36, of Kaneohe, a deputy sheriff, died Tuesday in Kaneohe. He was born in Heidelberg, Germany. He is survived by parents Venancio and Judy and grandmother Haruko Alivado. Fukio Minami, 81, of Honolulu, a retired city Board of Water Supply field inspector, died last Monday. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Lillian S.; son Melvin K.; daughters Karen M. Rufina Domingo Nicolas, 92, of Waimanalo, a retired nursery employee, died Tuesday. She was born in the Philippines. She is survived by daughter Rizalina N. Simplicio Alejo Salvador, 99, of Aiea, died Tuesday in Wahiawa General Hospital. He was born in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines. He is survived by sons Emilio, Jose and Leonardo; daughters Angelina Atiburcio, Anastasia Masters, Magdalena Baguio, Theodora Hardin and Theresa Stoll; 34 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren. Tomeichi "Tommy" Shiraki, 83, of Koloa, Kauai, a retired Department of Land & Natural Resources carpenter, died March 27 in Wilcox Memorial Hospital. He was born in Koloa, Kauai. He is survived by brother Yukimasa and sisters Humiko Miyazaki and Lillian Ishida. Private services.

Judith Chiyoko Umetsu, 78, of Honolulu, a retired Libby/Dole personnel clerk, died March 22 at home. She was born in Honolulu.
