City advertises its
auctions in several ways

Question: Just which weeks of the month does the Honolulu Police Department hold its auction for unclaimed bicycles, and in which section of the newspaper would the notices be placed? I get tired of missing the notices, later to find out at least four people I know have just bought bikes dirt cheap from a police auction.

Answers: There are several ways to find out about bike auctions, as well as other city auctions.

Bike auctions are held twice a year, usually in the spring and fall, according to HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu.

News releases are sent out about a week before they're held, while an ad is placed in the legal-notices section of the newspapers about four weeks before the auction, she said.

You can call the city's 24-hour auction hot line, 527-6789, for information throughout the year about such auctions, or 529-3283 for information about bikes, mopeds and other unclaimed property.

You can also get information about auctions for abandoned and unclaimed vehicles by calling 733-2530.

No auction is currently scheduled.

The city periodically holds auctions for its own surplus equipment. For information on those auctions, call 523-4874 during business hours, Monday-Friday, or check the Web site www.co.honolulu.hi.us/pur/auctions.htm.

For $10 a year, you can sign up to be notified automatically when such auctions are held.

For more information or to obtain an application form for the Auction Notification System, call 523-4874 or check the Web site listed above.

Q: My husband and I recently passed a scene of a violent collision at the crossing by St. Louis Drive and Dole Street on Feb. 26. The scene that had appeared in the heads and minds of all residents in the neighborhood every time we passed by that junction finally played out in reality. Can you please give us your kokua and make authorities install a stoplight at the junction to slow down drivers coming down the steep hills of St. Louis Drive and allow those coming and going into Dole Street and Kaminaka Drive enough time to see what's coming down from St. Louis Drive?

A: The city Department of Transportation Services will conduct an investigation to see if a traffic signal is warranted at that intersection.

Various factors are considered in determining whether traffic lights should be installed.

The city is guided by the "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices," which is the national standard set by the Federal Highways Administration.

Investigators will look at accident data, volume of vehicles and pedestrian traffic in making a determination.
