Sewer work will detour traffic on Kailua road
The city is advising motorists of lane closings and detours along Kalaheo Avenue beginning today as work to replace and upgrade an aging sewer line resumes.
Kalaheo Avenue will be closed between Kainui Drive and Dune Circle from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
Traffic will be rerouted to Kainalu Drive via Kainui Drive and Kuulei Road. After 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and on Sundays, only the Kaneohe-bound lane of Kalaheo Avenue will be open.
This second increment of the first phase of the sewer project is estimated to cost $16.8 million, according to a news release.
The contractor is Westcon Microtunneling Inc. More information is available online at www.kalaheosewer.com.
Helicopters to help fix power lines in Palolo
Hawaiian Electric Co. will be using a helicopter this week to complete what it called "an emergency repair project" in Palolo Valley.
A company news release says three utility poles went down Saturday morning, causing the loss of a 138-kilovolt transmission line that feeds its Pukele substation in the back of the valley.
The existence of a second line meant no customers lost power, but HECO said the downed line must be repaired to provide backup.
The chopper flights are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Thursday.
The Pukele substation carries 18 percent of Oahu's electrical load serving communities from Kahala to St. Louis Heights, Manoa, McCully and Waikiki, HECO said.

Alcohol use probed in motorcycle crash
Police are investigating whether alcohol use was a factor in a motorcycle crash last night that left a man with critical injures and a woman with minor injures.
Police said the man, 47, was riding east on Kamehameha Highway near the Waiawa Bridge about 9:50 p.m. when he lost control. Both he and his passenger, a 42-year-old woman, were thrown from the motorcycle after it slammed into the bridge's railing, police said.
Neither victim was wearing a helmet, police said.
The victims were taken to Queen's Medical Center where the man was reported in critical condition and the woman in good condition.
Assault suspects use crutches to beat victim
Police arrested two men who allegedly assaulted a man and a boy in separate attacks on Leeward Coast beaches Saturday.
Police said a 25-year-old man was sleeping in his car at Maili Beach Park about 4:30 a.m., when a blue truck carrying five men parked nearby. Police said three men in the truck confronted him and kicked and punched him. When a woman on crutches tried to help, the men grabbed the crutches and used them to beat the victim on the head.
The victim was flown to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, police said. Police arrested three men on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder and auto theft.
Police said two of the suspects also are under investigation for an attack on a 16-year-old boy earlier Saturday at Makaha Surfing Beach.
The boy was struck in the face with a beer bottle and kicked in the face, police said.
