Buffs grab on to first

Becky Hogue scored a game-high 12 points and Punahou held off hard-charging Kamehameha 45-37 in a struggle between the two Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball heavyweights last night at Kekuhaupio Gym.
The Buffanblu took over first place at 7-0, while the defending state champion Warriors dropped into second at 6-1. The two teams, who fought in the state final a year ago, meet once more in the regular season.
"This team is so united," Punahou center Hogue said. "Kamehameha is an intimidating team, but we decided we weren't going to be intimidated. We had great leadership on the floor and that made a big difference."
Punahou's lead was as big as 32-16 midway through the third quarter, but Kamehameha closed out the period with a 13-4 run to head to the final period down 38-31. Megan Ching had seven points and Adrianne Hee had six in the spree, while Lehua Wood contributed several steals.
But the Buffanblu went into a successful stall in the final period as the two teams combined for a meager 13 points. Rachel Kane won the chess match with her ballhandling over Wood's defensive prowess.
"We didn't want to foul, because we wanted to stay in the game," Ching said. "We know Lehua is a good defender and we were thinking she could make some defensive plays and give us a chance. That's one thing we weren't prepared for. We weren't prepared for the stall and we'll be working on that."
Kamehameha cut it to eight points, 41-33, on Hee's third-effort rebound, but Hogue and Elyse Umeda each hit two foul shots to end it.
"Execution in our half-court offense was a big factor tonight," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said. "We did have some moments there in the second and third quarters where we weren't being disciplined. But we've got three good guards (Kane, Umeda and Shanna Dacanay) and we value the way they handled the ball. That stall isn't the most pretty thing to watch, but it was important especially since the 'W' was on the line."
After the game, Ching was still smiling while congratulating the opponents, despite the loss.
"It's all about confidence and mentality," she said. "We know we can play against them and succeed, but we have to believe."
She's hoping the Warriors can do what they did last year -- lose to the Buffanblu the first time and then beat them in the rematch and again in the state final.
