BBC, friends keep it
lively at Hank’s Cafe


Making the rounds on Nuuanu Avenue on a recent Tuesday after dining at Murphy's I was lured into Hank's Cafe, owned by Hank Taufaasau and Dave Loando, and was surprised to hear the happy, rocking, jumping sounds and vocals of BBC. BBC is made up of David Hayter, Bob Burdon and Manuel Aguirre. Musicians such as Jimmy Roberts, Don Humphrey, Karen Woodward and Jim Smart sit in, producing a bigger sound. The group is hot on Beatles and Presley tunes which bring dancers to the little floor. Fun is the same of the game at Hank's on Tuesdays, that's for sure ...

Courtney's big band

Del Courtney and his big band swing into action tomorrow for dancers at Blue Tropix, 4 to 7 p.m. Jimmy Borges and Shari Lynn will handle vocals and Gabe Baltazar will anchor the sax section. Entry is $7 ... Brickwood Galuteria with Imai and Friends have been doing so well at Brew Moon in their first Friday of the month gig that owner Marcus Bender has signed them up for all the Fridays through May. They sing sweet harmony from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. ... New York jazz guitarist Gene Bertoncini teams with hot isle bassist Byron Yasui tonight at 7:30 at the Academy of Arts Doris Duke Theater ... "This is the most significant recording that I have ever done," said Gordon Broad, of his 3 1/2 year project of putting Jesus' words at the Sermon of the Mount to 27 songs on the CD "Jesus Said..."

The Muscular Dystrophy Association will hold an attractive fund-raiser Friday at the Royal Hawaiian. Nick's, Morton's, Ruth's Chris, Hy's, Tokyo Tokyo, Meritage, Diamond Head Grill, Chart House, Hau Tree Lanai, Le Guignol, Ryan's and Zaffron will provide the food. Several beverage sponsors have signed up. There will be dance music and a silent auction. Cost is $100, $65 deductible. It's black-tie optional. Call 548-0588 for tickets ...

David and Helen McNeil welcomed two new additions to their home March 20 but Helen had to do all of the work. She had twin girls, India Hokulea and Skye Alohilani. India is named for the country of David's birth, which took place while his dad was stationed there as a colonel in the British Army. Skye is named for Scotland's Isle of Skye, site of the colonel's ancestral home. Dave is back to work at McNeil Wilson Communications. Helen will eventually return as account manager for Pacific Basin Communications ...

Pops goes local

Entertaining show is scheduled Friday and next Saturday as Amy Gilliom, Barry Flanagan and Jordan Segundo join Matt Catingub and the Honolulu Symphony Pops at the Concert Hall ... Musician and record producer/engineer Steve Jones has to be a happy dad. That's because his 12-year-old-son Sean and Beau Albrechtson, 13, have formed a duo called Retro Edge and had their first gig last Saturday. They sing, dance and play ukes and performed at the first birthday baby luau of Kanalu Pascua. Kanalu's mom is Regina Igarashi, a former Miss Aloha Hula. Her dad is John Pascua. Steve and his partner in S&B Productions Brian Kessler are working on a CD project with Sean and Beau ...
