Isle mushrooms debut

Soon there will be fungus among us, as Hamakua Mushrooms comes on line with exotic 'shrooms grown in a new facility on the Big Island.

That should be in a few weeks, but until then, the company is priming the pump, getting mushroom lovers used to the idea of locally grown hon-shimeji and oyster mushrooms.

California-grown versions have been test-marketed under the Hamakua name for several weeks in select stores. Saturday they'll be presented in a tasting at Costco in Hawaii Kai. A chef will prepare the mushrooms for sampling and 1-pound packages will be sold.

Roy returns to TV

A new season of "Hawaii Cooks with Roy Yamaguchi" begins tonight on public broadcast stations nationwide.

The half-hour show will air at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays on KHET/PBS, repeating at 5:30 p.m. Saturdays.

Tonight's show includes a visit to Tamashiro Market and a Big Island ginger farm. Future shows will go to a Molokai salt farm, a noodle factory and a vanilla grove.

In addition, Ten Speed Press has just released a companion cookbook, "Hawaii Cooks: Flavors from Roy's Pacific Rim Kitchen," ($32.50, hardcover) featuring recipes from the show.

Tonight you can cook along with Chinese-Style Whole Steamed Fish and Thai-Style Deep-Fried Mullet.

What's in your dinner?

The April meeting of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii will focus on genetically engineered foods, with a talk by Steven M. Druker, a public-interest attorney who filed suit against the Food and Drug Administration on the matter.

Druker will speak at 7 p.m. next Wednesday on the risks of genetically engineered foods, citing experts within such official agencies as the FDA, Royal Society of Canada and Public Health Association of Australia.

He also will explain how much genetically engineered food is already part of our diets.

The free lecture will be held on at the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse. Druker also will speak at 7 p.m. April 12 at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Kahului, Maui. Call 944-VEGI.
