The National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) received accounts during the past week of endangered Hawaiian monk seals interacting with swimmers at Poipu Beach, Kauai. As many as five seals were reported on the beach at one time. On Thursday, fisheries biologist Bradley Ryon was dispatched to monitor the animals and document any interactions with people. Three young seals were observed deliberately swimming toward and interacting with beachgoers. None of the seals are expectant females looking for a place to give birth.
