Anything goes
to win a prizeIT'S AMAZING what lengths some people will go to in order to score free stuff. Last week at "Epic Sesh 2," a few lucky (if you could call them that) college students got crazy onstage at Pipeline Cafe for a shot at surfboards from Town and Country, a stereo from Bose and a brand new car.
Nineteen-year-old Hawaii Kai resident Jean Paul Gedeon walked away with the night's top prize, a 2003 Toyota Echo, after eating what's described as a "golf ball-size raw fish eyeball" on stage. And he wasn't the only one getting nuts -- Monica Waiau decided it was worth it to shave her head in exchange for a surfboard, while Colin Wagatsuma took first place in a chili pepper-eating contest for a board of his own. And Micah Camero went home with a Bose stereo after eating the most cockroaches ...
THE NIGHTSPOT formerly known as World Cafe reopened to a decent-size crowd last weekend. It's now known as Volcanoes Nightclub, but make no mistake -- this place is World's with a paint job and a few more pool tables. Granted, the crowd I saw Saturday night was more mature and better behaved than before, but nothing's really been done to the club's layout and deejays are still spinning the same music that World's was known for.
If management is aiming for an older crowd, they're going to have to flip the script a bit and give people a reason to come back; theme nights or monthly parties with local promoters have proven to be successful at other venues, for example. And it might cost a little money, but new carpeting on the ground floor would do wonders ...
IF YOU missed out on last week's Pussycat Lounge anniversary party at the Wave Waikiki, take note: Former Hawaii resident "Superstar" DJ Keoki is still in town, and he'll be playing a few more gigs before he goes. Check Keoki out tonight and next Tuesday at the Wave, and who knows where else he might show up ...
AND ON Thursday, head over to Studio1 for a night of performance poetry and live entertainment at "First Thursdays." Two-time Wordstew Slam champion Steve Kealoha Wong hosts the open-mic event, and one lucky poet will walk away with $100 for sharing what's on their mind. Sisters in Sound's DJ Zita will also be there to provide the evening's soundtrack. Doors open at 7 p.m. for "First Thursdays," and $5 gets you in. Call 387-9664 for more info ...
