Koko Head park
will get its lights backQuestion: What is happening with the replacement of the lights at Koko Head District Park? Two of the light fixtures on one of the poles fell off about two years ago. Did they repair them? No, they took all the light poles down instead, leaving the field with no lights for the last two years. I know they are going to say that it was too dangerous to leave them up, but I don't think they looked at all their options. All they had to do was replace the rusted cross beams and maybe replace some of the fixtures. This is the kind of situation that everybody is so sick of with our state and city governments. Instead of going to the community to see what they want, or if they could help, they take them down with no apparent plan. We have had to move our softball league to Waimanalo and then Wilson field just to keep playing.
Answer: You'll be getting the lights back at Koko Head District Park, although there's no specific date yet as to when they'll reappear.
The Department of Design and Construction is waiting for a construction contract to be finalized, after which a "notice to proceed" will be issued to the contractor, according to department Director Tim Steinberger.
The project will cost about $444,000.
The original lighting system was installed 30 years ago. Simply repairing the broken fixtures was not practical because they and the poles were rusted beyond repair and were a safety hazard, Steinberger said.
Regarding your statement that just the cross beams and some fixtures could have been replaced, it was determined that because the cross arm (cross beam) was badly rusted, the entire assembly would have had to be replaced.
The poles and the entire assembly at the top of the poles, consisting of the lighting fixtures, brackets, cross arms, maintenance platforms and electrical panels, were removed.
A capital improvements project then was initiated to replace the entire lighting system, Steinberger said.
He also said he was told that city officials discussed the lighting system replacement with the softball league that used the field.
Mahalo
To the kind people who found our dog and took good care of her. She apparently jumped out of our car while it was parked at Foodland Beretania. We couldn't find her, so we called the Hawaiian Humane Society. Some people had called the society, saying they had found her injured and bleeding and would take her to a vet. We called all the vets and couldn't find her and didn't hear anything more. But, the next morning, we found her waiting outside our door. We don't know what happened, but want to thank whoever picked her up and took care of her. Fortunately, she was not badly injured. -- Karl Bornhorst
