There are expected to be about 3,000 teddy bears with local entertainers at the Sixth Annual Teddy Bear Round-Up at Ala Moana Centerstage Saturday.Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, which sponsors the event, is encouraging residents to support child abuse prevention by donating a new or gently used teddy bear.
The goal this year is to collect enough bears to distribute to family shelters, children's hospitals and organizations on all islands that help families and children in crises.
"The first step in tackling this serious problem is educating people about child abuse and then provide alternative ways to relate to their children," said Elsie Foster, event co-chairwoman.
