HANAHAUOLI SCHOOL
Entertainment by and for children is part of the annual Hanahauoli fair.

Kids' fair fun

Get ready for the Hanahauoli School Children's Fair, taking place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 12 on the school grounds at 1922 Makiki St.

A highlight this year will be an "American Idol Builders" mock salon and day spa with face painting in theatrical makeup, tattoos, nail painting and accompanying "Hair Scare" with colorful wild 'dos.

As usual, there will be a country store stocked with homemade goodies such as mango chutney, pesto, salsa and guava barbecue sauce, along with plants and flowers, homemade crafts, sports cards and toys. At the bake sale, you can enjoy on-the-spot treats of ice cream sodas and coffee.

Then at 2 p.m., 'Ohi'a Productions will present Lisa Matsumoto and Roslyn's "Peril in Paradise," with Raymond Rainforest battling invasive species. There will be games, balloon animals and educational activities as well. Call 949-6461.

RomCom secrets

"How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" was just the most recent in a very long line of one of Hollywood's staple genres, the romantic comedy.

Studios are always looking for clever derivations of the "boy-meets-girl" storyline, and one man who's made a career of it is Billy Mernit, a private script consultant and story analyst at Universal Studios, and author of "Writing the Romantic Comedy."

Mernit will teach workshops on screenwriting in association with the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Outreach College. The first workshop on basic screenwriting takes place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, and the second, on romantic comedy writing, will take place the same times Saturday and Sunday Both workshops will be held in the Krauss Hall Yukiyoshi Room.

"Think of one of the most painful, humiliating, embarrassing things that ever happened to you with someone of the opposite sex," goes one line from his book, and go from there.

This two-day workshop promises to get students familiar with the "RomCom" form. The goal is to have each student complete a working outline by the end of classes.

Prerequisites include Mernit's book (with chapters on chemistry, humor, dialogue and sex) and recent viewings of "Tootsie," "When Harry Met Sally" and "Annie Hall."

The one-day screenwriting workshop is $85; the two-day romantic-comedy workshop is $150. Call 956-8400 or go to the Outreach College Web site at www.outreach.hawaii.edu/pnm.
