Low and Ching
win Gatorade honor

Iolani junior Derrick Low and Kamehameha senior Megan Ching are the Gatorade Hawaii High School Basketball Players of the Year.

Low averaged 14 points, 5.5 assists and 3.5 steals in leading the Raiders to the state title last month.

"He's the heart and soul of our team," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "A famous quote about K.C. Jones applies to Derrick: 'When we win by 20, he'll score two, when we win by two, he'll score 20.' "

Low is the reigning Star-Bulletin Mr. Basketball.

Ching, the 2002 Star-Bulletin Ms. Basketball, guided Kamehameha to the state championship last spring. She averaged 10.8 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals her junior year.

"Megan has played every position for us," Warriors coach Clay Cockett said. "She plays smart, is a solid ball handler, an aggressive defender and offensive threat, but also is a team player who understands how to prepare herself mentally to compete.

"She continues to be a positive influence on her teammates and supportive of their effort, yet able to offer advice and direction," he said.

She is also a 4.0 student and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Gatorade selects winners from 50 states and the District of Columbia, before choosing the national player of the year in mid-April.

Recent winners from Hawaii include Punahou's Becky Hogue (2002) and Kalaheo's Brandy Richardson (2000, '01) for girls and Kalaheo's Skyler Wilson (2001) and Maryknoll's Kenneth Lindsay (2000).
