and cheap pupusIF YOU haven't checked out the comics who perform at the Laugh Factory yet, the folks at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel have come up with a great reason to head into Waikiki for a night of fun.
"Phat Thursdays" started last week, and features an all-you-can-eat pupu buffet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. before the night's performance at 8 p.m. For just $10, stuff yourself silly with ahi and chicken skewers, barbecue ribs, peel-and-eat shrimp, pizza and more. Be prepared to drop another $20 on tickets if you're staying for the show; this week's featured comedian is Mario Joyner. Call 931-4490 ...
REGGAE FANS REPRESENT: Roots music has been getting a pretty nice push around town lately, and it doesn't look like things will slow down any time soon. This week's top pick is the "Hawaiian Roots Reggae Bashment," going off tonight at Don Ho's in Aloha Tower Marketplace. This one's an 18-and-over party with nonstop music starting at 9 p.m. and features Humble Soul, Bamboo, the Irie Souls, Red Degree and T.H.C. with DJs Big Bar, Daddy Lethal, Kulchie, Liloa and El Nino on the decks between sets. Guest artists Teacha Richie and Settla will also perform, and Haile Israel serves as the night's featured emcee.
If you can't make it to Don Ho's tonight, T.H.C. also plays tomorrow at Haleiwa Joe's and at the Mai Tai Bar on Sunday; both events are 21-and-over. And the Ionz play with the Hellbound Hounds tomorrow night at JC's Bar in Waikiki during "Rock and Reggae Clash II," starting at 9 p.m. You've got to be 21 to get into this one, too ...
YOU'VE GOT a shot at winning a PlayStation 2 or Game Boy Advance SP during the first-anniversary party of Sam the Man's BBQ and Ramen in Aiea on Saturday. Sam the Man himself will be hanging out while head cook Cody Li and the rest of the staff do all the real work (so don't worry about Sam messing up the food). Congrats on a successful first year ...
WHO NEEDS a class reunion when there's the Ocean Club? That's what kept running through my mind Tuesday night as I made my way around the Restaurant Row nightspot. I had stopped by to catch up with Kim Hayashi, a college classmate who was in town representing the Los Angeles Nisei Week Japanese Festival Court.
Within the first 15 minutes of being in the club, I had already spotted KITV weekend sports anchor Kanoa Leahey, Midweek staff writer Katie Young and former UH baseball pitcher Ryan Yamamoto -- all Iolani graduates like me. I had been kind of worried about my 10-year reunion coming up in a few years, but why bother when I can just go hang out at Ocean's instead ...
