Return to old Hawaii
Some of Hawaii's most beloved entertainers will reawaken "Dreams of Old Hawai'i," tracing the rich history of Hawaiian music in Waikiki through performance and historical footage of the world-famous "Hawaii Calls" show Friday at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider's Banyan Court.
Included in the illustrious cast will be Nina Keali'iwahamana, Mahi Beamer, Iwalani Kahalewai, Beverly Noa and Gary Aiko and others. The show will consist of music that spans the 1930s and beyond. Also appearing will be the Kamehameha Concert Glee Club.
"Dreams of Old Hawai'i" takes place 6 to 8 p.m., the result of an outreach service project of graduate students in the University of Hawaii Music Department. Producers include U'ilani Bobbitt, kumu hula and UH Hawaiian language instructor; Aaron Sala, coordinator of the Mele Hawai'i Institute; and Tim Keali'i Ho, director of choral music at Kamehameha Schools.
"One of the project's goals was to foster closer working relations between the university and the community, and we are extremely excited about the unprecedented partnership that our graduate students have with the Sheraton Moana Surfrider," said Jane Moulin, professor and chairwoman of the UH ethnomusicology program.
Tickets for the dinner concert are $50 and will include a lavish Hawaiian buffet with seating on the Banyan Veranda. Patrons can purchase cocktail show tickets for $25, which will include two cocktails and preferred seating in the courtyard. Prices include tax and gratuity and can be purchased calling the Sheraton Moana Surfrider at 922-3111. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Travel Desk in the hotel lobby.
