Vulcans earn a split
Relief pitcher Adam Inaba stranded a runner on second in the ninth inning to help the UH-Hilo baseball team split a doubleheader with Western Illinois at Kailua-Kona yesterday.
Inaba helped the Vulcans win the first game 4-3 but the Leathernecks took the second 10-7.
Douglas Nassimbene and Tom Henderson each drove in a run for the Vulcans (6-28) in the opener to give Daniel Lockett his first win.
Jason Miyahira didn't have as much luck against the Leathernecks in the second game, being pounded for seven runs in the second inning.
Rainbow Wahine blank Pioneers
Lauren Fitzgerald and Justine Boutet each surrendered a single game as the Hawaii women's tennis team shut out Lewis-Clark 9-0 yesterday at the UH tennis courts.The Wahine improved to 9-10 while winning each match in straight sets.
Chappell, McGuiness finish strong for UH
Tara Chappell and Megan McGuinness each shot a 76 in the final round to help the Hawaii women's golf team hold off Idaho for ninth place at the Mountain View Collegiate at Tucson, Ariz., yesterday.The Wahine shot a 311 yesterday to finish the tournament with a 928. Idaho shot a 305 to end up four shots behind Hawaii. International Pacific won the tournament at 890.
Militante leads Hawaii effort in javelin toss
Arwen Militante threw the javelin 32.95 meters to beat Calgary's Milissa VanHal (25.47) and Emily Joyce (17.12) at the Rainbow Invitational at Kaiser High School yesterday.Novelle Murray spun the discus 47.05 meters to win that event for Hawaii.
The next event for the Hawaii track and field team is the Rainbow Relays this weekend at Cooke Field.
Pearl City's Tashima brings home bronze
Corey Jo Tashima of Pearl City won a bronze medal in the National High School Judo championships at Spokane, Wash., yesterday.Tashima took third in the 48 kilogram weight class.
Tashima was Hawaii's only scorer in the meet, but Shingo Katsura of Moanalua finished in fourth place while Joel Akimoto of Pearl City and Sean Shinjo of Mililani took fifth.
Vulcans sweep Sea Warriors
Nancy Vega wrapped out four hits and drove in two runs to help the UH-Hilo softball team sweep Hawaii Pacific 4-1 and 5-4 at Hilo yesterday.Leo Sing Chow and Kristine Kahoalii combined to shut down the Sea Warriors in the first game and Tara Martinez survived a three-run shot by Holly Garcia to win the second after leaving a pair of runners on base in the final inning.
