Whale sanctuary plans to expand Maui center
The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is planning to expand its headquarters in Kihei.On the drawing board is demolition and removal of two old storage buildings, construction of a new multipurpose building and a new parking lot, with landscaping and an outdoor courtyard, according to a release from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal agency that oversees marine sanctuaries.
"The new building will enhance the capabilities of the sanctuary to accommodate its education and research programs," said Naomi McIntosh, acting sanctuary manager.

Hawaii Foodbank seeks food drive volunteers
The Hawaii Foodbank needs 1,200 more volunteers for its 14th Annual Food Drive April 19, says Polly Kauahi, director of fund development.Each year, the Foodbank needs some 2,000 volunteers to make the statewide fund-raising event a success, but the organization is still critically shorthanded, she said.
This year's goal is to collect 525,000 pounds of food and $400,000 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Waiokeola Congregational Church in Kahala, Windward City Shopping Center, Pearl City Shopping Center, McCully Shopping Center, Town Center of Mililani, Koko Marina Center and Restaurant Row.
Volunteer shifts are from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m., 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sign up by completing an application form for individuals or groups. They are available by fax, 836-2272, or mail, 2611-A Kilihau St., Honolulu, HI 96819-2021. The first 125 volunteers per site (or the first 250 at Restaurant Row) to register will get free T-shirts, which are also available for sale.
Volunteer responsibilities include sign waving, collecting cash with fishnets, food collecting, food sorting, serving refreshments, dispensing information and other tasks.
The Foodbank and employees of the City and County of Honolulu also are sponsoring the first Ohana Festival, April 5 and 6 at the Honolulu Civic Center. Food, live entertainment, rides and activities for families and keiki 12 years and under will be available. Bring your canned-good donations for the annual food drive and receive free admission, games and rides.

Man hurt when car hits Hauula utility pole
A man was seriously injured after crashing his car into a utility pole near Punaluu Beach Park in Hauula about 3:30 a.m.Police said the man, 22, was taken to Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.
The accident knocked out power for about 120 customers, a company spokesman said.

Gunman sought after 2 cars shot at in Kalihi
Police said two cars carrying three people each were hit with multiple gunshots early Saturday morning in Kalihi.Five men and a male teenager told police they were parked near the intersection of Kaumualii and Kalihi streets about 2 a.m. when they saw a large crowd gathering on Kaumualii Street for what looked like a fight.
They told police that as they were leaving the lane, they saw a man with a shotgun shoot at one of the cars. One of the victims reported seeing a dark-colored four-door sedan race up to the second car and fire a shot. The sedan was last seen traveling on North King Street.
Police found multiple gunshot holes in both cars.
Man walking back to his car shot in legs
A man suffered gunshot wounds to his legs early Saturday morning when he was walking back to his car in the Office Depot parking lot at 1505 Dillingham Blvd., police said.Police said the man was walking from a bar on the corner of Waiakamilo Road and Kalani Street about 2:20 a.m. when he heard what sounded like a gunshot.
He ducked, then felt pain in his legs and realized he had been shot.
Police said the victim was hit by multiple pellets from a single shotgun shell, which was found.
The man was taken to Kapiolani Medical Center where he was treated and released in good condition.
The victim said he did not see who shot him, nor did he see any vehicles in the area.
Cop's offer to help ends in foot chase
An off-duty policeman's offer to help a motorist led to a foot chase through Halawa early yesterday.The officer saw what was thought to be a stalled car at an intersection near Aloha Stadium about 12:20 a.m. and stopped to help, police said.
The driver appeared to reach for something under the steering column, looked at the officer, started the car, then sped off, police said.
The driver and two passengers later abandoned the car, which was stolen, in Halawa Valley.
Patrol officers caught an 18-year-old man, whom they arrested for auto theft.
He was later released after police determined he was one of passengers and not the driver, who was still at large last night.
Woman forced to give up keys at knifepoint
Police are looking for a man in his early 20s who stole a woman's car keys at knifepoint, then fled on foot Saturday night.Police said the 30-year-old woman was getting into her car at 8:40 p.m. in the parking lot at 2919 Kapiolani Blvd. when a man approached her frombehind.
The man allegedly put a pocketknife to her throat and demanded her car keys. Police said someone saw the incident and called for help. The suspect then took the car keys and fled, police said.

Suspect caught in switchblade threat
Police arrested a 20-year-old man who allegedly threatened a 17-year-old in-line skater with a switchblade early Saturday morning in Waikiki.Police said the teenager was skating on Kalakaua Avenue crossing Ala Wai Canal at about 3:45 a.m. when a man pulled a switchblade. The man allegedly threatened to cut up the teen.
Police said the victim reported it was a repeat of a March 16 incident.
Police arrested the suspect, who has no local address, for first-degree terroristic threatening and for possession of a switchblade, a misdemeanor.

Boy, 14, is arrested for alleged sex assault
Police arrested a 14-year-old boy Saturday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl two weeks ago in Mililani.The girl told her mother the suspect had touched her inappropriately, and the mother reported the incident to police. The boy faces a possible charge of sexual assault in the third degree.
NEIGHBOR ISLANDS
Firefighters hurt while battling brush fire
Two Big Island firefighters suffered minor burns before a brush fire was contained early yesterday morning in South Kohala.The two received first-degree burns when wind-blown flames reached their tanker truck at the head of the fire that covered 400 acres of vacant grassland, officials said.
Firefighters were called to the fire two miles east of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and half a mile north of a utility road Saturday afternoon.
The blaze was contained by preventing the fire from extending south of the road, officials said.
The effort to stop the spread of the fire involved 24 firefighters and 14 pieces of equipment, including two bulldozers and three helicopters.
