Catfish season near

You'll have to wait until May for Nuuanu Reservoir No. 4 to open for weekend channel catfish fishing, but you can apply April 1 through 17 for a freshwater game-fishing license and entry fishing card indicting the date and time you will be allowed to enter the grounds.

Entry will be strictly limited to those with the entry cards. No license is needed for those 8 and younger, but they must be accompanied by a licensed, supervising adult. There will be no make-up periods or refunds for those who fail to show up at their assigned time. Time slots are morning, 7 to 11 a.m., or afternoon, noon to 4 p.m. Warm clothing and rain gear are recommended.

Applications, which will not be mailed out, are available at the State Department of Land and Natural Resources visitor center/permit counter at 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 130, and from various licensing agents around the state.

Deadline is 4 p.m. April 17. Fishing date and time will be assigned by drawing.

Fees are $5 for residents, including military; $3 for ages 9 to 15; and free for 65 or older. Non-residents fee is $25.

The bag limit is two catfish (16 inches or larger) per licensed angler. For more information, call DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources at 587-0100.

Go north you artists

The 6th annual Hale'iwa Arts Festival seeks visual and performing artists, cultural historians and storytellers for its annual summer event taking place July 26 and 27 at Hale'iwa Beach Park. More than 14,000 residents and visitors are expected to attend the event.

Only visuals artists displaying their own work can participate. Deadline to apply is April 12. Artists will be notified of acceptance by May 1. Performing artist should contact the group by May 9.

The summer arts event is organized to promote education and public awareness of arts and culture, with emphasis on participation, for the betterment of our community.

There is a non-refundable fee of $15 for each visual artist application. Visual artists who are selected and wish to participate are required to submit a $150 booth fee and a $50 refundable clean-up/survey fee.

Knauss fellows sought

The Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship Program is accepting fellowship applications.

Any student who on April 1, 2003, is in a graduate or professional program in a marine or aquatic-related field at a United States accredited institution of higher education may apply for a yearlong fellowship in the Washington, D.C., area through their local Sea Grant program. Applicants from states not served by a Sea Grant program should contacting the Knauss Fellows Program Manager at the National Sea Grant Office.

The one-year non-renewable assignment is from Feb. 1, 2004, to Jan. 31, 2005 and may be slightly flexible to accommodate academic semester needs.

Materials are due by 4:30 p.m. May 1 to Hawai'i Sea Grant office at the University of Hawaii at Manoa HIG building 238.
