Adria Campbell had something to prove.

She wasn't happy being cut from the Punahou soccer team during her freshman year and didn't want that to happen again.

"I really pushed to make it my sophomore and junior years. I wanted to show them that I was a key player."

The Star-Bulletin's All-State Player of the Year was the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's leading scorer for three years in a row. This year, she led the Buffanblu to the state championship.

Name: Adria Campbell

School: Punahou

Position: Forward

Notable: 2003 Hawaii Gatorade Player of the Year

Quotable: "She was the heart and soul of this team. And as a captain and a leader, she's the most humble person you can ever imagine. She doesn't go around bragging," said Punahou coach Jorge Barbosa.

"She was the heart and soul of this team," Buffanblu coach Jorge Barbosa said. "And as a captain and a leader, she's the most humble person you can ever imagine. She doesn't go around bragging.

"She talked to me at length after she was cut as a freshman. And then she worked so hard to not ever let it happen again."

If it wasn't for Campbell, it's likely Punahou would have been in the third-place contest instead of the state championship game.

Trailing Pearl City 1-0 in the semifinals, she scored twice to spearhead the 3-1 comeback victory.

"On the other goal, it was Adria's shot that hit the cross bar that another player knocked in," Barbosa said. "Her performance, the way she brought us back, was the chicken-skin kind."

Campbell isn't the type that takes too much credit.

"The reason we were successful is we had way more team chemistry than in other years," she said. "There were some doubts when I was a sophomore and a junior. This year, it felt like we really had it in us as a team to beat them."

By "them," she means the Mililani Trojans, whom the Buffanblu dethroned as state champions with a 1-0 victory in the final.

Campbell thought the play of center midfielders Allison Tsuchida and Rachael Lau played a huge factor in the team's success.

"They were always giving me great balls, always out of the defenders' reach," Campbell said. "They made it easy for me to pick up the ball and do what I needed to do. Without their precision, I don't know what I would have done."

Campbell will always remember the final whistle the most.

"It was amazing ... running and bawling tears of joy," she said.

That emotion was unusual for Campbell, who usually remains calm.

"She's very controlled, no matter what's happening in the game," Barbosa said. "Sometimes she's double-teamed and against Mililani she was triple-teamed, but she was still getting to the ball and making passes to her teammates."

Next year, Campbell plans on playing soccer in college, but doesn't know where yet. Hawaii, Southern Methodist and the University of Nevada are possibilities.

The Buffanblu senior is playing Division II basketball this spring and she loves it.

"It's a real relief, really fun," she said. "It's not extremely competitive but still a way to represent Punahou. I love playing basketball and half of our Division II team is from our soccer team."

Kamehameha coach Michele Nagamine didn't hesitate when asked who she thought should be player of the year.

"Adria Campbell, hands down," Nagamine said. "She really deserves it, such a hard worker and such a nice kid, extremely coachable and unassuming for as long as I've known her."

Campbell and her teammates are still waiting for part of their reward from the state championship victory.

"Coach said he'd treat us to breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert," Campbell said. "He still owes us dinner at Buca di Beppo. It'll probably cost a lot, the way we're going to eat."

Buffanblu, Trojans land
3 apiece on first team

Star-Bulletin staff

The state champion Punahou Buffanblu and runner-up Mililani Trojans account for six of the 12 first-team players on the Star-Bulletin's All-State girls soccer team.

Player of the year Adria Campbell is one of the three Punahou first-teamers along with goalkeeper Allison Lipsher and fullback Kelsey Baker.

Campbell, Hawaii's Gatorade Player of the Year, led the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in scoring for the third year in a row with 12 goals.

Lipsher and Baker formed the backbone of the Buffanblu's stingy defense.

Jorge Barbosa, who guided the team to its sixth state championship since the girls soccer tournament began in 1982, was chosen as coach of the year.

Prior to this year, the Buffanblu's last title was in 1998 under coach Debbie Ching.

"This team was focused and played with a lot of heart and desire," Barbosa said. "Many people didn't know it, but a lot of our girls were sick at the tournament. Some had headaches and dehydration. They were unbelievably gutty."

The three Mililani first-team selections -- fullback Mallory Iha, midfielder Jennifer Loo and forward Sarah Yoro -- helped lead the Trojans to the OIA title.

Baldwin and Pearl City placed two players each on the first team. Halfbacks Koren Takeyama and Kami Kapaku made it from the Bears, while fullback Christie Ayers and midfielder Kimberly Unten were the picks from the Chargers.

Forwards India Soo of Kamehameha and Britta Borne of Pac-Five round out the first team. Borne was second in the ILH in scoring with 11 goals and Soo was third with eight.

Unten was a force in the middle for Pearl City and led the OIA in scoring with 17 goals.

Aiea, which pushed Mililani to double overtime in the semifinals, didn't have any players on the first team, but three Na Alii players made the second team -- goalkeeper Diana Shiroma, fullback Randene Ako and forward Ambree Ako.

The All-State teams were picked after consultation with coaches from throughout the state.
